Cabling freak?

cyberguyprcyberguypr Mod Posts: 6,928 Mod
Is anyone else out there obsessed with ultra neat cabling? I opened the wrong drawer today at the office and found 80-90 fiber cables tangled in one big crapload of a mess that left me without air for a few seconds. I had to stop what I was doing and untangled them all, make nice rolls and separate them by color and length.

Please tell me I'm not alone.

Sounds like my cable drawer. Although mine sounds smaller and not quite as tangled.

I feel your pain, did any of the fiber have caps on them?

I walked into a "closet" with fiber just hanging there, no caps and I lost my breath. Then I had to explain to the curator (museum) why that was bad.

Why is that bad? One of the things not on the network+ icon_silent.gif.

I am not a cabling obsessed but I have been putting away cabling and arranging my computers, switches, and routers at home. I would like some pointers on neat cabling. What cable management stuff do you use or recommend?

I don't have a rack to place equipment; just a few computers and several smaller network switches. I am waiting on CAT 6 cables and a box of cable tie mounts to arrive from monoprice.com. I have recently installed multi-port nics on three computers and the number of cables running would increase. Right now all the cables are freely laid out along the walls. I would like some way to arrange them. I was thinking of tying several cables together at both ends.

Links to items or neat cabling resources would help.

For my computer desk I used a roll of 3/4 inch velcro. I wish I could take a picture but my desk isn't setup at the moment since i'm in the process of moving : /

I am very **** about cabling. If I open a data closet and see where someone just patched a cable from panel to switch and did not properly manage it threw...I track them down and "escort" them back to the closet to fix it. There is absolutely no excuse for not managing cable...oh and another thing that grinds my gears is when they plug it in a upper switch port coming from the bottom (or vice verse) management I mean WTF!!!!!

Dust. Fiber inevitably gets dirty. It just happens faster without caps.

    Thanks ehnde,

This was my first server room that I got to work in. I will say this is in no way how it turned out. I learned on this project how important cable management is. This was taken before the vm hosts had arrived and the rack was completed.

Right there with you. I am always straightening up cabling. In one of our room, someone plugged 1 device into a 4' tripplite, which I need to our event setups. Every time I see that..... icon_wink.gif My favorite is when I was called to clean up under a desk at work. I spent about 45 minutes rewiring and moving things around. Removed 6 powerstrips, several 15' CAT 5 cables connection stuff 3' apart. A month later, they moved their desk and it's more or less back to where it started.
My desk at home has all the cabling neatly tied with velcro

On a server rack, yes... Extra cables in storage... not so much. Then again I don't have to worry about either of those anymore. :p
