I don't have a spare computer to hook up for testing, is there a way to simulate a host on a switch? I was thinking I could add a loopback address but how could I put that in a vlan? Then I ran into this weirdness on both of my 2950's (both version 12.1(22)EA14):
S2(config)#int Loopback ? <0-2147483647> Loopback interface number S2(config)#int Loopback 0 ^ % Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

1600 series routers can be had for $10 and are perfect for this.
