Recently Microsoft started publishing the number of cert holders on the MCP site, check out the totals:

I just added a new bird to my little flock (3 mos. hawkhead parrot- also have a 14 mos. Blue & Gold Macaw) at home, so when the hand feeding is over, I will pick up the SQL books and try to make me a MCDBA before they hit 85,000Pavlov

I wonder aside from Microsoft, how many people in the world have actually obtained the CCIE.
As for SQL best of luck on that endeavor. I have the exam 228 book from MS, pretty self paced and readable.
It just didn't fascinate me enough yet to ever consider the 229 piece of the exam -
