I've always wondered, are you guys actually sitting down and reading 10-20 thousand+ page books cover to cover, or just referencing them when you don't understand something?

I'm still in the process of finishing up my CCNP, but I figure I'll read the 2 doyle books, the QOS certification guide, and then just watch INE videos for the rest. Does this seem reasonable?

Many of the books listed are completed through the CCNA --> CCNP -->CCIP studies (if pursued) --> CCIE Written course(s) of study. While the videos provide a great overview of the material, you will really need to understand the theory that is presented in the recommended CCIE Book list.

The lab exam will most definitely test your knowledge and comprehension at an expert level. Don't expect them to tell you "Configure R3 as an OSPF NSSA Router." Part of being an expert is understanding requirements and applying the most appropriate solution given the limited information. This is where having read the books will really pay off.

I would highly recommend reading the CCIE R&S Books listed if that is the track you intend to pursue. I need to finish Developing IP multicast Networks and Routing TCP/IP Volume II. To "complete" the list.
