What is the best way to move within a company?

While going through my job orientation today they took us on a tour and we stopped by the data center and met with the NOC technicians. What would be the best way to move to a different position within a company? I know its too soon and they might not be hiring but how would I approach the NOC techs and ask them if they could teach me a thing or two about networks?

First off I'd concentrate on becoming the best at the job you were hired for. People are much more likely to put in a good word for you to move to another department if you are an excellent, loyal worker. A good word from your current supervisor is probably the most important factor for an internal transfer.

Until you can show that I don't think there is anything wrong with rubbing elbows with the NOC guys when you have some free time. Having some of them put in a good word for you also would go a long way in getting you the job also.

I would like to add some of my own ideas to this.

Create a communication plan of the people who can directly influence your move. These key people will surface as you accrue time. Make sure to document who they are and to make sure you develop a relationship with them. Also make sure you let your boss know your intentions fairly early. Maybe 6 months out. However this is all dependant on your managers personality type.

Make friends with the guys in the NOC and see if they can help you get on. That to me seems to be one of the best ways. You get in with the group and one day one of the guys says why aren't you here. You are already ingrained in the culture and have surpassed all the HR hoops at that point.

It really depends on the company, and may be a conversation you have with your manager in a couple years. Size of the company and IT department factors in greatly.

The company I currently work (which is very large, 70,000+ employees) for encourages moving between teams. You have to have at least 1 year in your current position before you can be considered for a move. I'm on the Messaging team now, but they know I have experience in other areas like Information Security, and Storage, so I've been told if I get bored with Messaging, I can move to one of those teams if they have an opening. I'm not going to, but it's nice to have the option.

Another place I worked at didn't openly encourage it, but I did see people move from Help Desk jobs into Analyst jobs within the company. They were much smaller, only ~3,000 employees.
