Going Mad

I had an interview last week for a help desk position. Today I received a generic email saying that they are going to go with more qualified candidates. The interview was the worst interview I've ever had. I get into the building to have a interview with a systems engineer, not hiring manager. He didn't want to see my resume, references, certifications. He gave a test asking me numerous questions, not that hard and all within scope. After that he escorted me to the door and that was it. I don't know what went wrong. I called and email them, but received no response. I feel really confident and the work is easier than my current job. I applied for the position because it was a perfect match my qualifications.

Can someone give me some advice.

I'm confused, it's driving me crazy

Obviously the guy was a bit of an arse.

I wouldn't take that interview personally at all. They probably already had someone in mind and they needed to interview at least X amount of people.

I had a company that would interview me for numerous amount of positions (all of which I was qualified for), and they kept on giving me the same answer "Sorry, but we decided to hire internally". Come to find out that they had to interview someone from the outside in order to keep it fair on their side. I probably should have sued the company for doing this, but it wasn't worth my time.

Sounds to me like they had someone in mind already and were just going through the motions. Chalk it up as a chance to exercise your interviewing skills.

Yeah, that's most likely it. I shot them an email willing to work free for a short period, just so they can evaluate me a little more. I heard that they were understaffed and help desk was under qualified, so I thought I had a good chance at it.

I'm currently stuck at a temp job where there is work a few months and then at home a few months. I feel like I'm overqualified for my current position. I can't even talk to any at work about network stuff like cisco, vmware, and server 08 because no one there knows much about this stuff.

have you tried talking to your work's IT persons. Hiring within is an easier route.

It's a recruitment company that specialize in software development mostly. So I'm working the only technician job they have to offer. As for their client they really don't want to hire. Some people got hired years ago, but never since. Even if they started hiring there are way more guys that been there longer than me.

Walk through the interview again in your head (you've probably done it already many times), and try and think about the answers you provided. Were they technically correct?

If they were, have a think about what attitude you displayed and what impression you left on the interviewer.

It also sounds from your posts like you may have had a preconceived idea of what the position entailed, and almost like you were entitled to the job because you felt you were more than qualified. This can sometimes be a big mistake, and one interviewees are not always aware of. Have you had any mock interviews or interview skills training?

Again, from your posts, it looks like you were more interested in getting out of the job in which you are currently stuck. What I'm trying to get at is did you go into the interview with this attitude and outlook, even unintentionally?

Some points to consider. Either way, move on to the next one.

I missed some questions on specific names and locations in Windows 7. He said that I did decent and better than most. I've had interview training before and interviewed people as well. I wore shirt and tie. I had a good attitude.

I would just take the possibility that others gave that they already had somebody picked out but also if they treat people like that interviewing it is probably not a place you really want to work.

Exactly

If I was to make an assumption you were nothing but a number. Don't take it personally it has happened to most of us one time or another.

Thanks everyone. I feel better about this now. I'll use this anger as reason to study harder and gain my CCNA next month.
