How did you memorize you Cable specs?

paulgswansonpaulgswanson Member Posts: 311
Taking me N+ on the 11th of next month. I'm having trouble remembering cable specs.
Anyone have any tricks to remembering these things? Staring at charts and reciting numbers and distance just doesnt work for me (If only life was that easy icon_sad.gif)
More specifically Fiber is where I'm suffering. So many connectors and cable types and speeds and distances just puts me in deer in the headlights mode.

One thing that helps me is taking my own notes and organizing the information in a way that is easier for me to digest. The process helps me get a deeper understanding while I'm actively studying.

Quinnyfly created several documents he used when studying and posted links to them in this forum. It's great that he's sharing them and you can take a look at them in this post (http://www.techexams.net/forums/network/77042-new-member-studying-network.html), but more, I'm betting that the process of creating his own notes helped him pass the Network+ exam.

    Good luck.

Like Darril said, organize the material in a way that will help YOU. For example: for me, I was having a hard time with the 9 troubleshooting steps, Wireless specs, ethernet specs, and also what the Class A, B, and C address were. So instead of looking a page full of the info, or looking at notes..I began writing each one out about 10 times by hand, and BAM now I know all of them like the back of my hand

Thanks for the kind words and promotion Darril, very much appreciated. Another thing I tend to do, is compile my notes on cable speeds, specs, etc, in ascending order, it makes it easier to read, comprehend and also very easy to scribble down at the exam for reference. I will give you one of my Tables I made, I'll post others as soon as I find them! I actually had these stuck up on the outside of the shower so I could read them while shaving....LoL.....worked a treat, after awhile, I'd look away and try to recall them out loud, when I had them nailed I thought I was OK to move on and learn a new table.

I'd say OSI layers and not to stress on subnetting. I only had 1 question and it wasnt even complex. Choose the correct Ip range. And to know what cables are Fiber. I also only had 1 question on Routers and 1 on Switches.

I was annoyed it was so much easier than expected, I was really stressing about it!

Most of it was OSI layers and Connectors and tools.

Just to help others with the OSI layers, here is another table I made for each layer. The obvious thing first, going down throug the OSI model is that well trusted mneunomic:

    All
    People
    seem
    To
    Need
    data
    Processing

which equates to the 7 layers:

    Application layer
    Presentation layer
    Session layer
    Transport layer
    Network layer
    Data link layer
    Physical layer
