Inter Vlan Routing Help

JouteiJoutei Registered Users Posts: 7 ■□□□□□□□□□
Hey Guys,

I was doing a CCNA lab with intervlan Routing. The network topology is

x3 switches (1 vtp server , 2 clients)
x1 Router
x3 End device Computers
x1 Tftp server

Basically i setup everything correctly , the computers on the seperate vlans can ping each other.

But here's my question, should the switch be able to ping the computer's?
I was not able to ping a computer from my switch.

If it helps , I can upload the packet tracer file for it.

Cheers

the switch needs an IP address and a default gateway.

i have set a default gateway.
the switch needs an ip address ? i have vlan 99 with the ip address 172.17.99.11

if you confugured your switch correctly with an ip address and a default gw, ping should work.

I'm assuming that vlan99 interface is up/up and this subnet can route to computers that you're trying to ping?

when you login to the switch to ping you will need to make sure the default gateway is setup. Now I know you said it is, so can you ping R1 from the switch? can you ping any vlan interfaces on the router for the PC subnets?

Is the native vlan 99 on the same subnet as the default gateway ? check that out.

Ok , the mask is fine , sometime packet tracert frizz on some configurations on me , try to save the configurations and then reload the router and the switch.

    one of my friends said:

In the absence of a multi-layer switch the router is used for inter-vlan routing, ie router on a stick. The whole point of your lab. If your distribution layer switch is layer 3 capable you don't need a separate
layer 3 device. But in order to ping from a layer 2 only switch you have to assign ip addresses to the respective vlans.

The native VLAN on the router is set to VLAN 1 while the native VLAN for FA0/5 onSW1 is set to VLAN 99. Change the native VLAN on SW1 FA0/5 to VLAN 1 and your ping will work just fine.
