How do you start out in Networking?

I have a hard time responding to the question, "what kind of job do you want to have?" I really have no idea how to describe networking, Cisco, or related areas. I enjoy working on Cisco hardware and have a blast sitting around for hours reading Cisco press books(crazy as it sounds)...however I have no idea how to get into the field. I just have my experience in computers(A+) to go off of.

I'm currently living in Florida, and it seems impossible to find a job I want. icon_sad.gif All I can find are Help desk jobs. I'm at the point where I'd work anywhere and for anyone as long as I could work. >_<
However, in order for me to move somewhere where the industry is booming...I'd need the money, and a job. Neither of which I have.

icon_redface.gif I've had to sponge off family a lot, and even finding a job working with computer software/hardware is an experience. I was disabled and hospitalized for a while, so that big gap doesn't look good on my resume.

I'm hopefully going to grab my CCNA on wednesday and get on my 70-270, but I really can't afford to take more certifications in order to get a job.

If you do a search on Careerbuilder, monster and others...you see a lot of positions that say things such as: Network analyst, Network Engineer, Network Administrator, Network operations, Network specialist, etc etc...and I have no idea where I would fit in. :/

What about network technician or something I can understand?

    i'm sorry to hear that..
AFAIK, maybe the best position you can achieve for a start is being an off site technical support - since a field engineer required to do on site job which run here there..
but never give up, who knows someday.. :)

So wait. Have you actually done any networking yet for a company?

    If not...

    Take that helpdesk job.

    Here's me.

McDonalds -> National Computer (pc repair) -> Helpdesk -> Junior Systems Admin.

Networking is truly one of the fields where you start from the bottom and move up. No organizaion will give you full access to their servers, and routers because you have the edcational background.

I agree... Take the help desk job. You will get experience and can move up the chain within the company.

Its not glamorous but it helps put money in your pocket... In all reality you will be doing the same crap as a system admin, just the harder stuff.
On the road to Cisco. Will I hunt it, or will it hunt me?
