Just Passed LX0-102 - Now Linux+ and LPIC-1 Certified!!

Okason1Okason1 Registered Users Posts: 4 ■□□□□□□□□□
I have just passed LX0-102 with an unimpressive score of 560; I am just delighted to complete the Linux+ (LPIC-1) and now moving on to RHCSA. My goal is simple - to become the First Choice/top candidate for the next System Admin job that I apply for. I have been stuck in Helpdesk/NOC for six years now.

For anyone taking the Linux+ exam, read the Roderick Smith Guide, and supplement with Google for any given topic that did not make sense to you. Do all the chapter practices and try to remember any concept that is repeated often in that book, as you already no, the exam is not all multiple choices, there quite a few multiple choices. Other than 1 question in Samba, the book covers the exam thoroughly.

Congrats on the pass. If you are not aware, you automatically get 2 more certificates. They are from Novell. Novell CLA Certified Linux Administrator and Novell Data Center Technician. Register at Novell's site to get the certs.

Good luck on your RHCSA prep. I'm currently prepping for it as well.

    Congrats on the pass!

I have migrated to this forum, since Linux+ doesn't seem to be a popular topic on the UK sites.
Linux has been my main OS since 2001, and I have always felt, that I ought to get certified in it.

Could you tell me please how difficult you found this compared with say the Network+ exam?

I'm not asking for any 'inside info', just ballpark the difficulty rating.

    Thanks!

I don't think you can get Novell Data Center Technician, you only get LPIC-1 and Novel CLA in addition to Linux+ cert, correct me if i'm wrong...

You get both from Novell. When you register with them to receive the CLA they also send the Data Center Technical Specialist certificate.

4 certs for the price of 1! :)

The level of difficulty is about the same I would say if you do not have strong familiarity with the topic. The problem with certs like Linux+, Network+ etc is that it is of a necessity very broad. And sometimes hard to follow, for example in Linux+ the mainstream distributions have all moved beyond some of the certification's objectives so if you are trying to practice something that you read in the book, well you might not find that in your distribution or the location of the file has changed.

What really helps is some familiarity with the industry and everything makes sense. I did not for example read anything about the Linux+ SQL requirements because I took 2 database classes for my CIS degree and I also took a PHP/MySQL class. So again the level of difficulty really depends.

Very true. I encountered that very scenario many times during practice.

    @OP Gratz man! Nice work

Talk about a thing of beauty.

If I am fresh out of college I might go for this and then go for operations or system admin.

That can land you a solid job IMO

Congrats! Don't just dwell on the low score, go over those topics that you thought you scored lowest and get over to rhcsa prep.
Less1977, what is hot topic OS-wise on UK forums?

Seems to be lot of people doing A+ and Network+, then everyone seems to do the MS 70-680, and other Microsoft certs.

As for Linux+/LPIC-1 there seems to be little or no interest, which I find odd, since a quick look at the news, reveals several government bodies deploying Linux boxes, either tentatively, or permanently.

I have always believed it is just a matter of time, before Linux boxes are widely deployed for regular users, and looking at the state of the world now, I would say the time is right.

So I decided to do the LPIC-1 before considering the Microsoft certs, since there may be a skills shortage if Linux finds its way onto the Desktop.

Do you think I am making the right choice here?

Linux is cool, i actually got a job last week cos of my linux skills.
I'm not certified in redhat or lpic, but I took 3 redhat classes in college
and I also did well at the interview. Long story short, I declined the offer.

Please guys advise me how to obtain my Novell and LPIC-1 certifications...I have passed both Linux+ exams. I went to Novell web site to fill out form for the certification, however it's asking for verification code from LPI which i did not receive yet, do i have to wait? or contact LPI? not sure
  • techinthewoodstechinthewoods Member Posts: 96 ■■□□□□□□□□
    Ronni,

Register at the LPI website if you have not already done so. When you register there, you will be able to enter your comptia linux+ id and that will verify you for LPIC-1. Once you have that code, complete the registration at Novell and they will email you your 2 certificates.

So many people do the A+ N+ S+ and then go help desk. I say f-that if you want to excel quicker get the skills required to do so. I would lock into Linux and spend several years learning that. Apply for Linux positions and you will eventually get a look. Walk in their and show them you know what the heck you are talking about. Linux + and the 3 other certifications that go along with it is a great start.

What are the other 3 that go with Linux+?

The goverment went broke due all the bail outs Linux is even brighter than ever, it's the matrix as I see it, I agree with n+ a+ landing HD.

The HD isn't a dirty word. Entry-level isn't a bad thing. It's a step in the door, You've got your foot there. You either step through it past HD, or you take your foot out, and walk towards another door.

Yes, your foot will hurt while it's in the door. It's HelpDesk. Expect it.

    Yes!

It never hurts to know Linux. It's free, durable, and widely used. I am more of a programmer than an administrator, but I still think Linux is the coolest thing in town.

Knowing Linux raises your IQ. ;)
