CIW Exams

Hey TE

I was looking up a couple of exams for the Certified Internet Web Professional exams and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on these exams. I know a few people may have acquired some of these certs on here, but was looking into the CIW Site Development Associate. Does anyone know of any study material for these exams? Exam types?

Since there are no real study materials for that Perl exam, I'll probably have to get a copy of O'Reilly's "Learning Perl" and use it to prep for a BrainBench exam prior to taking CIW's. I did read a couple of free books in PDF/ePub when I was shooting for the exam originally, but they just weren't enough. It looks like I would need "Learning Perl" for the exercises alone.

I took the Javascript specialist exam last week and passed, as it was a requirement for WGU. I did very little hands on, pretty much read up on it for a week, and can say with all confidence I don't believe I could actually code anything beyond a basic "Hello World!" alert in javascript to save my life.

Not the book alone, but following the course of study with youtube videos on any gotchas.

For Database, I ended up reading parts of one print textbook I'd bought off Amazon, as well as eChapters from another text on eCengage. Relational algebra and. . . dang it, what was the other terminology

were what tripped me up. I believe I used uCertify as well.

On Foundations, I skimmed over their HTML text a little and did some practice tests (WGU's?). That was about all I needed. Even though it wasn't hard for me with my background, I'd still say it's a good IT overview exam. If I were hiring techs, I'd seriously toy with the idea of making them sit it to gauge their knowledge.

With Javascript, I'd spent about a month studying an "ancient" book on Javascript/Activescript before I started WGU, and later probably another 2-3 weeks with that book and uCertify before I actually took the test. I think that course is a decent overview of scripting from a programming perspective, and is a good prep for Java (if possible, take it right before the Java classes!). If MS ever comes up with a scripting exam, it would probably be a better fit for the networking tracks.

I think I'm finally ready to take the CIW Javascript exam. I just took a practice test:

I requested the voucher from WGU on Saturday, if they can get it to me tomorrow I'll sit the test on November 8th (I'm off work that day). Study materials have just been the .PDF's from certification-partners, provided by the school. I printed out every chapter, read the whole thing, then went chapter by chapter taking the practice tests, and finally went back over the ones that I did the worst on. Fortunately, this weekend I've been able to lock myself away and spend a lot of time on the material.

I actually spoke to someone on CIW's marketing team about this exam. They really need to change the name of this exam to something that reflects basic, entry-level knowledge of IT. Even with the HTML objectives aside, this exam tested me on everything I ever did with PCs/IT (and I do mean everything.) It felt very much like a comprehensive review of what I've done.

In fact, for those who wish to break into IT, they should be required to take this exam first, just to see if they could even hack even the CompTIA A+ certification (which was much "harder" that the CIW 1D0-510 exam).

I am scheduled for the js exam next week and feel under prepared for that based off the WGU materials. I'll give it a go and hopefully wont have to revisit it.

1D0-635: CIW JavaScript Specialist -uCertify (WGU students should be getting that for free....)

uCertify definitely helped me out for the 435 exam. Would have taken 635 but WGU wasn't ready for me to take the exam when I wanted to take it, so I opted for the 435 (against the course mentor's advice....I just wasn't going to wait another month for them to get their act together.)

Can't say enough good things about uCertify for the CIW stuff. I've looked at their Oracle/Sun and ITIL materials as well, and they look just as good. Don't know about the MS stuff.

But yes, definitely use uCertify religiously when studying for CIW stuff through WGU. You will not only stand a better chance of passing the exam more quickly, but you will likely learn new things from the uCertify materials alone (directly or indirectly, such as looking up their answers elsewhere to verify).

WGU students, how did this exam compare to the WGU practice exam and study materials for it? The material for 1D0-510 as presented at WGU looks quite broad with business and technology mixed together but the test reports above make it sound terribly easy.

Sorry to bother you with my question, I actually just signed up for that

I am interested in getting this certification but I am only a Social Media Specialist. My background is more web marketing so I am not a pro in Javascript, databases or web design. Do you think it would be ok for me to do it?

Also, when you are passing the exam, can you have your notes?

Notes are not allowed during the test. This could be a good certificate for you if you want to validate some general and baseline knowledge. You do not need to know a lot about javascript, databases or web design, especially not in depth.

IMHO, once you read that guide with your HTML knowledge you already possess you can probably schedule the exam the next day and pass. It is that easy. If you wanted to prepare for those Master CIW certs, after 1D0-510, get uCertify for those exams. (Not for 510 though...it was easy enough.) uCertify helped me for the 435 exam (Javascript). It's now replaced by the 635 but I believe uCertify does have kits for that exam by now.

Many of us take CIW exams because we're in WGU or are Alumni. Otherwise, we'd never bother...lol.

Completely agree. CIW tests were not very useful as far as I'm concerned. I couldn't find any study material (specifically) for them except for the poor material they provide. Nevertheless, not tough to pass at all. Just not very useful at all. I can't see how having the cert will do much for you if you know what I mean.

I took the exam last year, before I started WGU. Its definitely a basic cert and one that won't grace the page of my resume. That being said, there is some good information in it. Knowing what is going on behind the scenes and having some basic knowledge is useful.

Amazon has the version 4 book, which will have about 90% of what you need to know.
