Seems to be conflicting information but several blogs have replicated the issue. Samsung said it is a known issue and was patched some months ago but some people can make it work with their GS3. It also is an issue with a variety of Samsung phones but was pointed out its an Android issue, HTC has the issue as well.

So if it's patched or not, who knows seems to be some inconsistencies in the stories I am seeing. I really am a bit clueless on mobile phone security fixes because I rarely see patches get pushed to my phones over the years.

Yup I haven't seen a "patch" for any smartphone I have owned...

Samsung offers up patch for Galaxy S3 remote wipe vulnerability | Mobile - CNET News
The flaw lies in the way Samsung's TouchWiz UI handles unstructured supplementary service data codes, which are allowed to execute commands on the device's keypad. Most software dialers require users to hit the "send" button to complete a code, but Samsung's software does not, the researcher claims.

    I don't care for Touchwiz....
