stright-thru vs crossover

Does anyone now how to distinguish a stright-thru cable from a crossover cable just by looking at them, are they color coded or labelled, how can you tell the difference?

You can look at each end of a cable, check the colors on each wire, if they match, it's a patch, if not, it could be a cross. You could also use a cable tester.

If it's a cable you purchased. It'll have it written on it usually. It will simply read patch if it's just a regular, and it'll read crossover (or something similar) if is a X over.

Hold up both ends.....hold the connectors side by side. If they are in the same order (color) it is a normal patch cable. If wires 1 and 3......and 2 and 6 are crossed, it is a cross over.

You can't always go by color. Some Knuckle-head may not know the color scheme, but could get the correct pinouts. A crossover is usually 568A on one side and 568B on the other.

straight through:

Pin 1 (TX+) <

> Pin 1 (RX+)
Pin 2 (TX-) <

> Pin 2 (RX-)
Pin 3 (RX+) <

> Pin 3 (TX+)
Pin 6 (RX-) <

> Pin 6 (TX-)

Cross over:

Pin 1 (TX+) <

> Pin 3 (RX+)
Pin 2 (TX-) <

> Pin 6 (RX-)
Pin 3 (RX+) <

> Pin 1 (TX+)
Pin 6 (RX-) <

> Pin 2 (TX-)

Other tips......If wired correctly (color):

568A:

GreenWhite, Green, OrangeWhite, Blue, BlueWhite, Orange, BrownWhite, Brown

568B:

OrangeWhite, Orange, GreenWhite, Blue, BlueWhite, Green, BrownWhite, Brown

When doing normal wiring, I normally use 568B.
