Do most jobs drug test?
More like entry level jobs such help desk?

Sorry for small post but its just such a simple question.

Disclaimer:
(I'm no drug addict but i'm a marijuana smoker and just curious)(I'm still planning on quitting regardless just in case)

Every position with the exception of one has required drug testing. My position at a steel mill required Drug and Alcohol testing at random intervals. That said, my IT career has been limited to an initial test. Regardless, I don't do anything to risk my job as a test could be required at any time.

Almost every position I've had, including contract, have required a pre-employment drug test.

WHen I did DOD work I had to take a initial drug test, but after that nothing. I've also worked for quite a few cisco partners and none required a drug test unless you were working on specific projects. Hopefully they strike down laws against MJ. Other drugs it depends. I don't smoke, but after the learning the real history behind it its a real joke that they still have laws on the books against it.

There was no drug test for my current gig. Only requirement was that I had no felonies and did not have bad credit...

Ive never been drug tested for any corporate IT job.

I guess because it's Hollywood? IDK maybe it could be I've never worked for a government type job or for a company contracted by uncle sam.

My current job waived the entry drug test, since they were hiring me right off active duty it wasn't worth the money. I am subject to random, but they haven't done it before... and I've been to Amsterdam twice in the last 2 years, I was really expecting a test when I got back.

If you smoked some weed in a country where it was legal, then got fired after failing a drug test, that would suck. I have an adderall prescription and I've always worried it'd show up on a drug test and get me in trouble, never has though.

I've never been drug tested before at any of my jobs. However, many of my classmates that I graduated with said that their jobs did. So I would be prepared for anything. Better safe then sorry

If you plan on or think a government security clearance might be in your future, you might want to stay away from drugs and in some cases associations that are drug users.

Can argue all day if it should be legal, etc. The fact remains it's not at this time, so that's the reality you have to deal with. One just needs to make the decision for themselves and accept the consequences for their actions.

Interesting answers in this thread. I've only had to drug test at retail minimum wage slave or IT temp contract positions. My last job was with a large bank and current job is a county non-profit, neither required a drug test.

Drugs are bad. Mmmmkay?

I don't think it's been mentioned. But, it's more than just if you take a test randomly, at the beginning, etc.

If you get injured on the job, don't be expecting workman's compensation/disability maybe even the company disability programs to kick in if you end up testing positive for illegal drugs.

No one plans on getting injured, but it happens everyday, in all work settings.

I've never been drug tested for any of the jobs in IT I've ever held. Background checks, sure, but not drug testing. I think the only time I was asked to pee in a cup was in my pre-IT days, and I was applying for a fork lift driver job.

I was told by the HR at one cisco partner, that if they did random drug testing they would loose too many key players in staff, and she had worked at multiple partners and said this is the same across the board, so they just rather not do it. Since it remains illegal unless you live in certain states, just be clean about it

The job I'm in now is the 1st one I've ever had that did NOT require a drug test. The company doesn't do them at all, for any position. Every other job I've had has required them. Usually only pre-employment then never again after starting, exception being my time in the Military which was both that and "randomly" throughout the year.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I personally don't agree with the prohibition of victimless crimes, and honestly, I would love to smoke. But acting out as a demonstration of my own personal liberty is not worth the potential consequence of ruining my career.

Being able to:
1) tell the difference between different beans, roasts and blends
2) using 1 to produce a fine coffee (espresso, machiato, latte, etc.)
3) buying many rounds in the pub
4) enjoying 2 and 3 and being good company
5) being able to get home and remembering how you did so (correctly)
6) being able to turn up for work the next day and able to complete it compentently
7 ) ???
8 ) profit

Because you still would have to worry about it. California technically has legal medical marijuana laws but employers still fire people with prescriptions when they test positive due to the fact that it's illegal under federal law. There even was a supreme court ruling that backed this up and said it wasn't discrimination to fire them. The only way to be safe is not to smoke or to move to the Netherlands. It sucks but until it's legal federally, you can't be 100% safe

Been a while since i've had one, last one was maybe 5 years ago at a large company. There was the initial pre-screen and nothing else. The drug screens don't bother me, it's the credit screens that make me nervous.

I've only had one. But as someone else mentioned, if you ever want to do something that will require you to obtain a security clearance you should just stop now. Active use and/or active association with people who do is pretty much an automatic dis-qualifier for a security clearance.

There's also the question of why you use whatever you use. Is it a crutch, etc. However, that's more of a philosophical point.
