Where to start?

Hi everyone,

Looking at the way things are going, it looks like my job (IT Systems Administrator) will vanish in 10 years due to companies moving to the cloud. This would lower costs, maintenance and downtime. As a result I would like to get started on cloud certifications. I work in a SME and the only experience I have with virtualization is using VMWare Workstation and Hyper-V. I have heard that VMware is the way to go so I am just wondering where exactly can I start?

CompTIA cloud seems useless tbh and I really want to learn VMWare, any pointers?

Thanks

Everything cloud related with VMware is based off of a solid vSphere foundation. I'd suggest looking into the VCP5-DV material, even if you're not planning on taking the exam. Book wise, look for Mastering vSphere 5 by Scott Lowe. If you prefer video learning, the TrainSignal courses are good.

Exactly what meadIT said. The Mastering book is fantastic.

On another note, Hyper-v is getting up there too with vSphere. For SME's, it's cheaper to use Hyper-v than vSphere. Certification wise, it may not be a bad idea to certify yourself on Hyper-v too. Just something to contemplate on.
