I got my resume done by recruitment firms and the charges weren’t expensive. I got it for 20 $ max with all the features like resume writing, cover letter, recommendation letter formats etc. I got many calls when I floated my resume. My resume was an eye turner.

What do people around here think about cover letters?

Personally, I do not have an "objective" statement in the resume. However, I do write an original cover letter for each place that I apply to. I feel it shows initiative in making a resume that is tailored for the company that you are applying to. It shows that much more effort.

Do any of you do the same practice?

I have a general question about resumes. I apologize if it has already been asked...

I plan to make a visual (maybe interactive?) resume for my website. Are you allowed to use company logos for the skills section? ie Windows/Apple logos for operating systems, etc

    Thanks!

it can be done just be sure you include the disclaimer ie " they own it". most companies allow you to use their logo in cases where you are a registered partner or a certification holder.

I have a question, I have worked independently doing IT support for friends, family, referrals, etc. for over 15 years now. I started doing it in HS to earn some extra money and never stopped. How can I show this experience in my resume?
This was all done off the record so there was never an official job title, start/end date, etc. Can I list it as experience? Thanks

Here is my resume currently. Any suggestions? I'm trying to break into the IT field, either help desk or entry level networking.

    I'm no expert, but here's my 2cents

I'd shorten your summary, its supposed to be a powerful statement, I'd tighten it up and use a few less fluff words like motivated self starter. Some of that is ok, just a bit too much.

For your areas of strength, I'd start with the networking, not with communication skills, youre trying to sell your networking side.

For the duties you have listed, you need to go into much more detail. "Responsible for maintaining a LAN providing IP, e-mail and all other networking services to over 350 users on a daily basis." doesnt tell me if youre a NOC guy, Senior Engineer, or guy who surfs the web.

Under Technical proficiencies, start with the Cisco stuff, again sell the networking side first if your looking for a networking job.

First of all, the advice here has been very helpful. But here's my question - I'm currently in the process of revising my resume and seeking an entry level help desk position. I held a help desk position for 1 year which ended in 2009. However, my experience since then has leaned more towards customer service with some basic troubleshooting than IT. Would this hurt my chances at getting a help desk position and how would I address this on a resume? Thank you for any help.

nice posts. a follow up on it for anyone looking to enter Las Vegas market on the strip, namely the casinos. Forget a follow up letter most times they wont even look at them. Way too many people trying to do it. Also, there are certain rules and protocols they use that may prohibit them from even receiving them in the first place.
ALL jobs are done via computers and almost impossible to meet hiring mngr. until they make final decision and that can take months and as of this writing there very few casino and hotel IT positions available.

depends on the city and company you are applying for. In Vegas they won't even accept a cover letter for casino or hotel jobs. No time to read them I think.

hey, another vegas kid! and yep, pretty much every casino out here uses an automated web form and will only let you upload a resume, no cover letter. i imagine they get hundreds of resumes per position, if not more. very few IT positions right now, and lots of out of work IT people

Just read through the thread and noticed an item not mentioned yet. Didn't catch this for years on mine...

If you have a latin term related to your degree, such as summa cum laude, magna cum laude or cum laude, they should be in italics and lowercase as they are foreign language terms.

@memendieta - Welcome to the TE forums - you may be better off if you post your resume review request in a new thread. I personally believe that your Summary section is fine. I am not a proponent of lengthy summaries. That is a section is that skimmed in favour of the Experience section of a resume.

    Hello,

    Personally my resume format is:

    Name and Contact Info

Certs (Most relevant first to last)

    Clearance (if you have one)

    Education

    Objective

    Work experience

    Technical Skills

    Core Strengths

    Technical Training

    References upon request

My Senior Cyber Security Manager has seen thousands of resumes pass her desk, and that was her advice to me. Think of what is the most important thing to an IT business. If you have a lot of certs (especially higher tier certs) then that is your most important value as that will specify to the employer what your specialized skills are. If the job requires a clearance (Top Secret) that would be second and Education would be third as that validates your base and keeps the door open. Work experience is overall the most important but for someone who is looking through a bunch of resume's they are vetting you on the top three first before they take the time to review your work experience. The Technical skills and Core strengths are just additives that MIGHT put you over another candidate who is similarly qualified. Spelling mistakes can instantly put your resume in the trash as well.
