Not sure if this was discussed here before, but a new version of this famous book was released a couple of months ago:

have anyone read the book yet? I noticed the coverage of iOS and Android which is an interesting topic.

Opinions about the book? I'm thinking of buying it

    I think I will buy it anyway. I'm reading more into penetration testing these days; as a sysadmin, I feel that I'm not aware enough about how to protect the systems that I manage.


    Has anyone read this book or any previous release of this book? it seems famous


    Any other recommendations?

    I read v6 of this book and found it to be a great "blanket" coverage of the subject matter. You won't make yourself a pentester with these books, but it sounds like they're exactly what you'd want as a Sys Admin. I've had v7 sitting on my shelf since it was released, but haven't gotten around to reading it. Just thumbing through, it looks like it has some very good info.

    @ajd86: thanks for the information. I've been reading some hacking exposed and hack proofing books, and I'm learning a lot of concept. They made me think of new creative ways to protect and attack my systems, and I implemented some nice and simple scripts that I wouldn't have thought of hadn't I read those books.

    It's an interesting and enjoyable read, I read it a few years ago and it helps in the all-round knowledge you want and need.

    This thread and good reviews on Amazon motivated me to read the book.

    I personally found Hacking Exposed 7 rather cursory. IMO it provides a well-rounded introductory overview of the subject but lacks any serious depth. YMMV.

    I read 2 chapters so far, and I think I agree with your review. It was an eye opener for me. After reading the Unix security chapter, it made me conclude that there's no way to secure the server icon_lol.gif

    I'm currently reading Hacking Exposed 7 and I'm on Chapter 4 right now. So far I agree that it is a good blanket overview that covers a lot of tools and techniques but doesn't go greatly in depth. Overall, I'm enjoying the book. I'm making notes of the different tools and what they are used for and then I will go back in my lab later and start playing with them.

    I read about one third of it thoroughly and flipped through the rest of the pages. The chapter on Unix was the one I was mostly interested in icon_smile.gif
