N+ exam

Hello everyone, i have recently decided to change careers. I have been a personal trainer and a musician for most of my adult life but decided it was time for a change. So i enrolled in an IT school. The computer world is really new to me but i realize if i want job security in the future this is the way to go. I passed the A+ essentials and A+ practical test fairly easy but i am having a hard time with the N+ exam. I have taken it twice now and havent missed it by about 5 questions each time. I was considering buying some of the test questions from Actual tests or some of the other ones out there.. I was wondering what you guys thoughts are on this? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Actual Tests is a brain **** site. It is cheating. I'm sure a majority of the people on the forum will frown upon it.

What book are you using? How did you go about studying/preparing? How long have you been studying for?

Also, check out Transcender, Measure Up, and/or Kaplan. In addition to paid products, they each include demos for free (usually 10-30 questions.) CompTIA also has a demo test on their site. There's also LearnSmart which currently has large pdf tests for a dollar ($1). They're huge tests - hundreds of pages probably, w/ the questions divided by categories. I got practice tests for all the certs I plan to take 2013/2014 for $11 from them.

Welcome to the forums.

Congrats on the A+ pass and not giving up on the Network+. If you're dropping the exam, it indicates you're missing some key knowledge. Using questions that purport to be the actual exams and don't give explanations won't help you get that knowledge and when you come across questions that are only slightly modified, you'll get them wrong. If you go that route, you might eventually pass, but the lack of knowledge tends to snowball. People that go this route are often exposed when asked simple questions in job interviews, or on the job if they do get past an interview.

I'd suggest getting some study materials and going over the concepts that you missed the most on the exam.

Thank you for for the replies! I really appreciate it! I'm definitely not giving up! And i don't want to do anything that would be considered cheating either. I want to learn this stuff not just pass the test, so I appreciate all the input! I have the Comptia N+ N10-05 from the school. I also got bought an additional book which ive read by Mike Myers which was really helpful! I actually did better the first time i took the exam than the second which is why im so frustrated. I will check out all the suggestions you guys gave me and give this exam another try! Thank you again for the replies!! I really appreciate it!

Hey thanks for all the info!! I really appreciate it.. Quick question though, i don't mind paying for some practice tests at all but do the LearnSmart tests include explanations on the wrong answers? Thank you again!

The $1 dollar LearnSmart tests? Yeah, they do include explanations. Try them out before shelling a lot more on alternate practice exams.
Also, do all the practice questions that came along w/ the Mike Meyers book.
Then, if you really need more practice, there's Measure Up, Transcender, and Kaplan.

Also print out the objectives and go over each item on it. make sure you understand each bullet. You can test yourself by giving an explanation on each bullet out loud.

The best thing would be to try to find out your weak/problem areas and attack them. At the moment, do you know what they are?

Thank you so much for replying and for your help! I really appreciate it! And yes i definitely know my problem areas.. Its troubleshooting! Ive memorized every port number, cable length, OSI layers, tools, protocols, and acronyms! I just seem to have a lot of trouble with the troubleshooting questions.. Im not sure how to attack them tho since i don't have a whole lot of experience. Thanks again!!

Troubleshooting on the Net+ didn't seem to bad to me. It seemed more about understanding the concepts, and how 1 concept differed from another, as opposed to straight memorization.

Understanding how the different protocols differ from EACH OTHER would help. But so will practice exams. Let us know how you do on the practice exams you try.

Thanks! Like i said, i really appreciate all the help!! I thought this exam was pretty straight forward.. There some tricky questions but not as many as i was expectiing.. I think the trick is not only knowing the stuff but also really slowing down and taking the time to read the questions. At least twice before you answer. My next batch is for the mcts. Should be starting in the next couple weeks. Thanks again!
