Had issues with GD in general. I've heard GDIT will try to low-ball you. GL.

    Actually mid 6 figures.

They can be low with the pay depending on the project. If you don't already have a TS/SCI thats a good place to be. Other than that I would look elsewhere.

Got about 7 years of day to day interaction with GDIT..never been impressed. Really good people that work there (engineers), but I can't say the same for management over there. That being said, if the salary is good and the opportunity seems like a good one it might be worth a look.

FWIW, when I got out of the military I ran as fast as I could from GD. GD in my mind (based on my experiences) generally = lots of deployments, mediocre pay, and a less than impressive culture (again, from the top down..I know lots of good guys who work there).

The verdict is out. Pass on GDIT. I worked for them for 6 weeks. My 1st week I started looking for another job.

I'm an alumnus of GDIT, having worked for them for 5 years. It's true that they low ball you, but in my experience they hired me with no experience and I was able to work up from there. They paid for every cert I have except for my CISSP and CCNA:Sec, which I took about a year ago. They also paid for the last two years of my degree program. On top of that, I was able to move within the company three times, each time was a jump in pay $10k or more (I started at $60k so you can do that math and see where I ended) which is good money for Hawaii, considering the lowball offers that float around here from all of the companies! Anyhow, I can honestly say that I wouldn't be in the position I am today if not for GDIT.

With that being said, I would hesitate to take another position with GDIT because they are going through a painful reorganization that was a long time coming. I was living on the tail ends of a couple of lavish long term contracts which is why they were throwing money around like a japanese businessman in Vegas. But those big contracts are gone and in their place are all these small 1, 3, 5 year renewables and management was not equipped or prepared to compete on that scale. So from what I've seen and heard from folks still with GDIT, most of those jobs are either overstated (Network Engineer doing patching/cabling) or are short term positions. This one may be different, but I'd do my research before considering it.

This is supposed to be a principal engineer position for a contract that is lasting 5 years with 3 more option years on top of that. I am going in to interview tomorrow. We'll see how it goes. As far as lowballing, when they asked me how much I wanted. They said that was reasonable. I thought they would say the reverse.

I've been with them for 3 years, hired like spicy right out of the military. Yeah, I got low balled (but overseas so housing made up for it) but got a 35% pay raise within a year (moved from a Jr to Sr position) and a performance award of 1-3k every year. Benefits wise have been great, I'm almost done with a Masters that they paid for (WGU, so not expensive, but free is free) as well as my CISSP (overseas training included, hotel/travel/training/test/etc was around 14k), my CCNA, and a number of other certs (with corresponding training) has all been paid. I've had at least 1 overseas trip a year, initiated by me but paid by them, so I've been pretty happy.

Pay, low to start but good after I proved I was worth more (what more can you ask for with little experience outside the military). Benefits have been great for me, friends that are with other companies don't have it as good. Of course, a lot of that is who your PM is, ours is a great guy and is more than willing to take care of his people.

Any ideas what their policy is on military leave?
  • MrAgentMrAgent Member Posts: 1,310 ■■■■■■■■□□
So I had an interview with the director of the program, a lead engineer, and another engineer (who I used to work with on another contract), the interview went extremely well. They asked me lots of questions on my background, how I would react, and a couple of tech questions. Then I asked them a lot of questions. I am supposed to hear from someone by tomorrow.

So I found out about the military leave policy. If you get called up/deployed, they will pay the difference in pay for up to 5 years. If you get called to go do some training, then they will pay up to 8 weeks. Pretty fantastic if you ask me.

Sounds pretty good. It is really hard to accurately make general statements about any of these large companies... they don't have a single culture or philosophy (despite executive management attempts to create it or state otherwise). Each contract will have its own culture based on the terms of the contract, the contract management, the client, and the level of talent of individuals on the contract. Also, each geography will have an influence on the culture... like the metro DC area is going to be VERY different from anywhere else, as would be combat zones.

I know that a few of the larger contracting companies are moving to paying tuition, period, which is a good benefit for some. If I ever decide to go to Notre Dame for my MBA, I will likely look at moving to one of these companies. I think GDIT is among them (Lockheed being another).

It all matters how it works for you, so let us know how it progresses.

Interviewed there a few years ago. Got an offer and ended up turning it down due to salary and schedule. I wanted 10K more than they wanted to pay...and no way I am working Sundays during football season.

I leveraged the offer to get a substantial raise at my current job.
  • powerfoolpowerfool Member Posts: 1,675 ■■■■■■■■□□
@aaron0011 - I am curious how you leveraged it. Did you tell your current boss that you had an offer for more money? It just seems like a lot of that could potentially backfire. I have been in a similar position, but I intended to leave the then current job, but ultimately stayed again my default judgement and the job lasted another two years.

So they ended up going with another candidate who had more recent migration experience. This position was more of a migration lead than anything else. They also said I did very well during the interview process and that I would fit in very well. They did say they have a few recs coming out in the next week or two which were lead AD/Virtualization positions which they thought I would be a great fit for. I was told I should expect to hear something in a couple of weeks.
