Hi guys,
I passed 70-461 exam today with 9**. Most of the questions are multiply choice.
I am a .net programmer with 30% of my working time on sql server for 5 years. I also spent 2 weeks studying sql server 2012.
Next will be 70-483 and 70-480.
Wish you guys do well in 461 as well!

Do you think its possible for a novice to pass this exam by just reading the training kit book in a month ? I have almost no experience with SQL server. The only SQL I have written is simple joins and subqueries.

Without any experience, the training kit is far from sufficient material to pass this exam. I took the upgrade version of this exam (457) and the questions will test all the major sections of querying. -

If as you said that you only know simple joins and subqueries, I would say it's not enough to pass the exam by just reading that book. The fact is in the actual exam, there are lot of questions that are not even covered by that book.
I suggest that you need to check the skills measured part in Exam 70-461: Querying Microsoft SQL Server 2012.
Remember that the exam is more about knowing concept rather than writing queris.

Han is right. I failed the exam and I had basic knowledge. In my new role that is starting to grow and grow etc. I am going to wait a few months and revisit this exam. I really really want this lol -

Syntax is a killer on this exam. A colleague of mine recently failed this exam and he felt that syntax was one of the reasons he didn't pass. It's a tough exam but it is passable. If you have experience with SQL Server, likely the 70-461 book is all you need. If not, I would start with Iztik's beginner's book and then work through the 70-461. In either case, lots of practice is warranted.When you go the extra mile, there's no traffic.

Yeah I grabbed Iztik's just to make sure my foundation is solid. I started off taking SQL design, foundation, and two other SQL courses, but never really used it. About 3 years ago I took another SQL course and started using it very lightly. Until my last 3 month contract and this new position I didn't have the chance to use it. Now I am getting a lot better at it. You start to learn quickly the book is dreamland scenarios. In real life you have to create a 3 level joined with 3 subqueries and several case statements imbedded into your code. Then you have to look at the data and see if it make sense. Then of course you have different layers of data and you have to make sure you are joining on data at the same level or it won't produce meaningful results. It gets tricky but I figure if I can keep hammering away for a few months and read Itzik book Ill start to seriously consider the exam. I really want this exam for several of reason. To prove to myself I can do it. To be able to list it in my professional summary. I like my certifications but none would be more meaningful for my line of work than this one. SQL certification professional has a nice ring to it.

I need to get busy on this exam, I have been stuck on chapter 4 of the Training Kit for about a week. I have already passed the SQL Server Administrating 462 exam, so I have this one and the Data Warehouse one to take for the MCSA. I was thinking about taking the 2 upgrade exams thinking it might be easier (fewer questions on query) but my guess is that it will be like 417 where you have to get 700 in each section.Aaron

I know I'm late to the reply convo but can anyone confirm what the little key image/symbol in the "Microsoft - Querying SQL Server 2012 Training Kit" means?
I want to assume it just indicates a 'key' topic but I also don't want to assume when I'm learning a new topic. Lol thanks!
