Hello guys,

I just want to ask something regarding trunking, I read on the sybex book that 1900 is for isl and 2950 dot 1q. However

Is it possible to connect the two using layer 3 switching like 3500 series
which support isl and dot 1q.

Ex. vlan A port 2-3 are in 1900
vlan B port 4-5 are in 2950

Can these two see each other

The 1900's only support isl. However, the 2900XL's will support both isl and dot1q.

No, it either has to be isl or dot1q. You can't mix the two.

"ISL (Cisco proprietary protocol, and not supported by the 2940 or 2950 series switches)" (http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/50.shtml)

Though I am not 100% sure about the trunking connections supported by these switches, I have a doubt. Since a device that supports both trunking connections is going to be in between, won't the whole setup work.

    Ex:
    1900 (1) <
    > (1)3500(12) <
    > (12) 2950

What will happen if the trunk ports, ie both 1s are using ISL, and both trunk ports 12s are going to use dot1q?
Isn't the type of trunk connection attached to a port?

What if we want to create a VLAN with few 1900s that uses the Cisco proprietary protocol, and few non-cisco switches that uses 802.1Q ?

    Thanks,

WELL U NEED TO USE ISL as the trunking protocol as 1900 support only ISL and 2900 series supports both. So configure ISl on both swithes. You will be successful in ur practical.
