New VMware certification ID

I assume everyone received the email from VMware regarding the new certificaton ID. I logged into VMware's mylearn page, and sure enough all my unique cert# have been changed to the meaningless gibberish. This implies when I get my VCDX, it'll have this gibberish vs. #1xx. I just lost most of my motivation for attempting the VCDX. icon_sad.gif

"To streamline the certification exam registration process, and provide you a single consolidated view of your training and certification histories, we have updated our candidate tracking systems."

How did my old VCP number not give ma consolidated view ?!?

It's as stupid as Microsoft renaming certifications to MCSE and calling it new .....

You should not lose your motivation though - you worked hard for it so now you better finish it or I'll fly over there and kick you in the butt myself :)

So was your motivation based on the "elite factor" that the VCDX #1xx provides or on something bigger, like possessing proven, expert level knowledge in the respective technology?

I don't think most people get to the VCDX stage without having the latter. Sure, it's cool to know that you could be #X of X in the world that holds a VCDX. But it's not why most people do it.

Besides, I suspect that VMware will continue to issue VCDX numbers as they have before. For one, it's a great marketing tool. It would also make sense because the VCDX process is 100% internal to VMware. I think one of the reasons they switched up the cert numbers and candidate IDs is because of the difficulty in blending the Pearson & MyLearn systems, particularly when a person wants to authorize/register a VCAP exam. This change seems to be aimed at addressing those types of issues.

Though as with a lot of things, time will tell.

The "Elite Factor" might be important though, especially when it comes to $$ ...

But you are right, they do say its to make it easier for testing providers, which VMware doesn't need to care about when it comes to the VCDX.

Actually the VCDX numbers won't change... it's just the VCP/VCAP exams that will change as per Mark Burnstad who runs the VCDX program.

Yeah, Mark confirmed that the VCDX will continue the certification numbers both during the process and on the transcript. He is also going to fight to have the VCDX number returned to the transcript.

Definitely the elite factor. Gotta push myself somehow. Prepping for the VCDX was an all-consuming process (I suspect most top tier certs are like that). Often questioned myself for doing it. I submitted my design early because I was driving myself nuts trying to improve it.

As for possessing proven, expert level knowledge, I have enough of higher VMware certs, and colleagues/peers who acknowledge my expertise.

To get to the top I need selfish/greedy/egotistical reasons to motivate me.

So what's better than being a VCDX? Being 1 of the first ~100 VCDX.

Well, being one of the first 032434252Q-00023244 VCDX's isn't half bad, either.
    IT guy since 12/00

Recent: 11/2019 - RHCSA (RHEL 7); 2/2019 - Updated VCP to 6.5 (just a few days before VMware discontinued the re-cert policy...)

Future: Probably continued Red Hat Immersion, Possibly VCAP Design, or maybe a completely different path. Depends on job demands...
