Model Question

I have a couple of questions about some about some of the Cisco models.

For example:

Catalyst 1924 XL EN
Catalyst 1924 A

I realize the EN is the enterprise edition and the A is standard addition. My question is what does XL mean? Also would a enterprise edition IOS work on a standard edition switch? Also what does the Catalyst part mean?

Catalyst is just a name Cisco uses for their switches.
Yes, you can upgrade the standard to enterprise by upgrading the CatOS software.
The XL slipped my mind... it'll come to mind after the weekend ;)

Are you sure you are looking at a 1924 XL and not a 2924 XL? There is no such model on cisco's eol list for the 1900 series.

My mistake, I meant 2924 XL, do you know what that abbreviation represents?

I don't think it means anything except that in 1998 somebody in cisco marketing though it sounded cool:
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- January 6, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced the Cisco Catalyst. 2900 Series XL, a new family of high-performance autosensing, blah, blah, blah...
