OptionsMike-Mike Member Posts: 1,860Thanks guys, it has been a lot of work, I felt such a feeling of relief and pride when I said I would accept my new role. I rebooted my life at 31, and completely changed careers into IT. I left a union job where I did pretty well, but I didn't like the job. I just turned 34, and with this job I will finally surpass what I was making at my old career.
my new title is Network Test Engineer.. which is pretty damn sweet....
Also, as a huge shocker, my CIW certs were kind of useful in the interviewCurrently Working On

CIW skeptics, beware-- this will happen more and more.Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

First, congrats on the new job!!
If you don't mind saying which certs you thought came in handy? I've been leaving most of my certs off my resume. But, it seems maybe I should throw some of them back on there.Bachelor of Science, Information Technology (Software) - WGU -

It wasn't the cert itself necessarily, I mean they didn't go, "oh wow you got CIW Foundations? you're hired!"
but when they asked about SQL, I was honest and said I wasn't that familiar, but I have just recently passed the CIW Database Specialist, so I was able to speak on it at a very low level, like I told them some terms I knew about about Select statements and whatnot...
and again, that wasn't the only factor by any means, the CCNA was the big boy, but it helpedCurrently Working On

i was a telephone man for 9 years, call center and then technician, but not really IT related.. while there I got an Associates in Business from University of Phoenix....
I got laid off, so then I went to a local school and got some certs.. but that was only like 6 months...
currently I'm 3 classes away from finishing up my Bachelors with WGU.
work wise, after those six months I got a job at a Service Desk for a large company. I was in that role just shy of a year, then got promoted to an Access Management role, doing file right and user accounts. did that for almost a year...
then came to my current job in a NOC, network monitoring...
so...
9 years with a phone company = 3 years call center, 6 years service tech
2 years with a large company = 1 year service desk, 1 year file rights
1 year in my current role of first level NOC stuffCurrently Working On
