"Cinco De Mayo", a holiday I've come to understand that while seemingly important (winning independence from Spain), is not actually celebrated in Mexico, for whatever reason(s). Another excuse for American's to get drunk? It would appear so!

I actually think the holiday was invented by Coors beer as a marketing scheme.

Believe it or not, Cinco de Mayo celebrates independence from France, not Spain.

Here is the real deal and why it is not celebrated all over Mexico. basically a province holiday and not national.

Down here near Los Angeles you always know it's Cinco de Mayo because the freeways are amazingly free of traffic. In fact, the same is true anytime there's a half-million Mexican nationals and ex-patriots at a "Reconquista" rally in downtown L.A. being led by the Mayor of Los Angeles himself, no less.
