What exactly is an IT Analyst?

Looking to get out of help desk and move forward. I'm sure the IT Analyst positions vary, but can anyone tell me what general duties would be? Anyone out there with an IT Analyst position? Anyone that could chime in would be greatly appreciated.

This particular one is out of state and would require relocation. I've tried calling and asking, but HR only has a 1 paragraph description and says a interview would be required to get more info. The description doesn't tell me anything.

Basically don't want to end up in a job I wouldn't enjoy.

Like you said, IT Analysts can actually be different positions. I'm an IT Analyst and I'm responsible for the network, physical and virtual servers, VDI and desktop deployment at my college. My colleague is also an IT Analyst and she deals with databases and reports.

Depending on the pay and the distance, it could be worth sitting for an interview even just to find out. If your willing to move, and they are willing to give you the job I would hate to see someone miss out on something like that. You never know what there idea of IT Analyst is, it could be a cool job.

In my experience "IT Analyst" seems to be a catch-all, miscellaneous title for when they can't/don't want to be more specific. What it means varies from company to company.

Also, IT Analyst is most likely a higher role than helpdesk. Where I work, we have Computer operators (kind of like helpdesks, may be even lower), IT Specialists (desktop support, web programming and such) and then IT Analysts.

Currently I am a computer operator/helpdesk. I would say it's split 50/50. Very basic work.

I have about 3 solid years experience in helpdesk. I believe I'll call Monday and see if I can speak to a department head who might be able to give more info. From what I gathered online it is definitely varied.

I always get nervous when a higher level position shows up. I feel like working in basic helpdesk and having no experience as a higher level tech would end up getting me fired if I couldn't hang.

It can mean anything to be honest. Normally an analyst doesn't provide support as their main function. However I have see this not be the case as well. I am a Business Analyst and before that a Data Analyst. I validated the table structure helped map out the database schema from a business modeling view. I created some dashboard and other types of reports with automation built into the report. That's what I did and do now. Just my two cents.
