Hello guys. Just wondering if we need an actual lab to get through the ccent the new exam? what other alternatives are out there to learn the Cisco IOS and what is needed for the exam?

you POSSIBLY could...BUT...without practice on a lab or a simulator...it may be harder to stick in your head...labbing is part of learning and you will need it in the 2nd part so i say get it going.
Odom book and practice should suffice.

I really can't say how much of actual practical is required since I'm beginner myself at this point.

But there are definitely lab simulations such as packet tracers which imitate the real-world network process and able us to experiment with it. Being a Novice myself, I have attempted a few of these lab practices on PT and I have to say they, doing them did add more concept understanding to my theoretical knowledge.

What material are you following to study?

Packet tracer and GNS3 are good alternatives to purchasing real equipment. Be warned though that GNS3 cannot emulate switches.

No. Don't waste your money unless you are going for CCNP or higher.

Can you pass the exam without a lab? Sure. Will you learn a lot more and be better prepared for the real world if you get a lab? Yes.

Upto CCNA, Packet tracer is more than enough .For advanced labs you can use GNS3

I would agree with SysnetNotes. Packet Tracer is enough up to CCNA. I used real equipment and packet tracer. It will stick though if you use real equipment. Always depends on a budget.

I dont know why people are talking Packet Tracer, you need CNA access last I checked.

What material are you following to study?

ODOM's book, CBT Nuggets. Thats about it for now.

I think you should go for Cisco 100-101 Exam first of all as it covers all the basics including Cisco IOS. After achieving this milestone step forward in the CCENT certification track.
