Finally made the move to Houston, TX

It's been a little rough so far (car battery died on me once I hit Channelview, TX

). I got it fixed now. I had a interview today, so hopefully that will go well:D. So far, I like Houston, the traffic is a little tough, but lots of stuff to see and do. Big difference from Florida.

Good job on the spirit of adventure and hope! i moved to Louisiana with no job prospects (for a completely unrelated field) and ended up living in my car for a week till I scored a job and the company put me up, paid for meals, transportation, everything! ...feels good (wo)man!

Welcome to Houston. The traffic can be tough, but plan your commute and you should be fine. Also if you end up working down town, most companies pay for your bus passes(from a park and ride to downtown).

One thing that is nice about Houston is that the job market, especially for IT, is holding and growing. Start networking and going to IT events.

I left because I couldn't keep employed (short contract work). I decided to take the chance because I noticed colleagues leaving Florida and gaining jobs in other states in less than a few weeks. So, I choose Houston because it's biggest city in Texas (mainly just wanted to see it).

Same but I'm still debating on where to move to......Cali would be nice but taxes meh....NC has nice outdoors type of places but I enjoy the beach and Texas is like Florida where we don't pay state taxes

I actually moved from Tampa to Denver, best decision I made. There are so many jobs out here but I miss warm weather.

I am hoping to make the move to Denver this spring/summer; that's home to me, but I hear mixed reviews about the IT job market.

Congrats on the move! Take some time to check out San Antonio as well, you might like it there better.

My plan failed and I'm back in Florida. I ran out of money right when I got a job offer. I even got approved for an apartment and only needed a little more cash. I probably rushed everything. I had some IRS issues and had no choice but to come back. At this point, I'm going to try to save some more money and get that apartment. I think that could make big difference.

Bummer dude! I had been looking to move to Houston for 7 months and make the move in Jan, but with a new baby, and not having enough savings I could not afford to make the move and ended up being offered work here. I am still moving there, but actually I am really really really interested in Austin, TX now... so I'll be keeping my eye on both.... Hopefully you can save up and make the move... I'm definitely only moving once I have the ability to pay for a place and 3 months up front... I feel 3 months should be more than enough time to find a gig, with horrible luck. Hopefully you can make this happen. How did you like it in the time you were down there? Did you feel that it would continue to be a good move while living there for the short while?

Thought I'll update this thread. After coming back, I got really frustrated and hated the second I reached Florida soil again. I stayed depressed for a few weeks. A recruiter I knew for a while helped me to get a short contract (3 months). I was frustrated again with the typical short term Floridian contract. Just as the contract was nearing an end I was blessed with the contract being extended until next year. Hopefully after finishing, I'll leave with enough money to not come back. Things are finally starting to look bright:)

Glad to hear you're moving forward(and have a contract that is actually lasting a while). If you're still aiming for Texas you may want to look at San Antonio if you didn't like the Houston traffic.

Traffic was bad in Houston back in 1999-2000 era. That was when I was living there, doing contract work, upgrading mainframe terminals to pc work.

I was looking at moving there back then as well, however the dotcom crash was implemented and put that on hold. And I kept telling myself I could find a better tech job in Omaha.

I know exactly how you feel about leaving FL. I found a job in Atlanta and I am leaving Friday night. I cannot wait to get out of here. I would suggest to see if you can somehow get a job lined up before moving there this time. I asked to do a Skype interview and they were okay with that.

Texas is a great place to find jobs. Back in 2011 or 12 can't remember 1/3 of all ( real job growth ) came out of the state of Texas. (What I mean by real is not 20 hour a week fast food jobs). It's a great place to find nice paying jobs that lead to professional careers. Nicely done CW!

What is wrong with Tampa Florida?

I have a colleague who swears by that city being great and better than Texas in his opinion.

Houston is great, Austin is as well. I would head to the major cities for the jobs. Houston traffic still blows and if your not on the road by 6:00 am your riding in traffic. If you can handle the humidity during the summer you will be fine.

I'm back again. My contract got extended again until the end of this year, but I decided to leave. I feel that I can do much better here.

oh how I dislike Houston, I love Austin though. Austin is just booming when it comes to IT...But congrats to you!

If it doesn't work out for you in Houston, I'd seriously consider Austin or at the least, Dallas. If you're going to live ANYWHERE in Texas, it needs to be Austin.

So I'm curious. I'm contemplating making the move down to TX as well.

A lot of people in this thread recommend Austin and say that it has a booming IT field. However, whenever I do a job search for the Austin area I don't get many results. What gives?

I really don't understand all the hate for Houston on here. IT is booming all around Texas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, all of which are catering to different fields of IT. It's also odd a lot of people who are saying they dislike Houston, love Austin. Go figure people here in Houston dislike Austin, me personally Austin would be the last place I would want to live in Texas. Also to note, IT is booming more in Houston than Austin, look at job postings and you will see that.

As with any potential move, research the area and see what the job market is like, and if the lifestyle surrounding the city will fit you.
