Upgrading router memory

I have a couple 1841's I need to put more memory in.
My question is, do I have to use a specific brand?
the slots look the same as laptop memory.
I notice the slots are empty so I assume the 128mb on the router now is onboard.
If I add memory does it disable the onboard memory?

Cisco will tell you that you need to use Cisco memory, specifically:

Now that said, I bought a used 1811 off eBay which spontaneously rebooted every day. Some generic $10 memory DIMMs (also off eBay) fixed that right up. If you're upgrading real production routers on your company's network, might be better to stick with the Cisco-recommended (and heavily marked-up) parts. Otherwise sticking with generics might do you fine.
