WAN Technologies (HDLC vs PPP etc)

While I know that HDLC, PPP, and Frame-Relay are all protocols used for WAN encapsulation, I'm a little unclear on whether they are exclusively used on (designed for?) serial interfaces.
Which brings up another question: If I used a FastEthernet interface to connect to the WAN instead of a serial interface, what are the pros/cons, and would I need to use a different encapsulation protocol?

    I know there is a PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet). AT&T used [and may still use it] it with their ADSL service (AT&T/Bellsouth DSL).

    As for using FastEthernet vs. Serial. FastEthernet will be faster than most serial connections (exceptions: OC-3 or Better, and possibly one or two others). Ethernet has its own encapsulation, though there are some methods (e.g. PPPoE) for encapsulating another protocol within an Ethernet Frame.
