Types of entry level job.

I always hear and read about people talking about a NOC job, i would like to know, since it's an entry level job how is this kind of job different from the Help-desk job or what sets it apart from the help-desk role?

    The NOC is usually more centered around the network and services rather than user focused. Both are your front line support, just concentrating in different areas.

    In a NOC you won't receive calls from customers having user level problems (or what I call Layer 8 issues), instead, you will receive calls from customers having problems with servers at a data-center or poor performance on a network segment, etc. Also, in a NOC entry-level job it is a lot easier to get involved in engineering tasks and get experience in implementations.

    I don't mean to bump but,

    Here in NJ (near Philly), I get next to nothing typing NOC and Network Operations into sites like Indeed.

    Does anyone have any other key words to use when searching? I try IT and help desk, as well as technical support.

    I think NOC jobs/data center jobs have hot spots and are very regional. I have never seen a single NOC job posted to any job board in all of the souther half of Michigan in 6 months.

    But then again, I think we have all of 3 data centers in the area.

    What are some NOC "hot spot" areas?

    I've seen a few posted in NORTH NJ (near NYC) - but only a few. Other keywords I've used for searching have been "junior cisco", "junior network", "network technician", "network operations technician", "data center network technician" etc to try to catch more entry-level networking positions.
    Goals for 2018:
    Certs: RHCSA, LFCS: Ubuntu, CNCF CKA, CNCF CKAD | AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, AWS Solutions Architect Pro, AWS Certified Security Specialist, GCP Professional Cloud Architect
    Learn: Terraform, Kubernetes, Prometheus & Golang | Improve: Docker, Python Programming
    To-do | In Progress | Completed

    I could be "off" on that assumption, but it seems to hold true. There are cities/areas that have NOC jobs posted frequently (SoCal for example). There are places that dont (Metro Detroit). I've seen jobs similar to a NOC, but not pure NOC.

    I just figured for how often people refer to finding a NOC job or looking for a NOC job they must be common elseware...just not here.

    @ chris I was just posing the question to see if anyone else would chime in and answer it w/ any areas where NOC and/or entry-level networking jobs might be more prevalent. More so for personal reasons - I'm planning to relocate in the next few months.

    But once again, I don't know about south NJ, but I know I see similar jobs every now and then in the Northern NJ/Greater NYC area.

    The Denver area has a lot of NOC jobs. Usually listed as Network Engineer I, or Network Technician I.
