i have a MCSA 2003, which i got in 2010. However due to not working in the industry and studying a networking related course i have neglected the server side. I am looking to get back into it and thinking of starting over again from scratch.

The only reason i ask is because i feel that some companies are still haven't migrated over to 2012 version

Because of exam retirements and only having the MCSA 2003 and not the MCSE 2003, your only option is to start over.

Look into either 70-640 or 70-642 and start studying. If you have studied networking recently,70-642 might be easier for you.

Most companies have at least some 2012 even if they have not fully moved over. Also all of the new MCSE certification tracks will be based on the server 2012 MCSA. I really believe that most people that pass the 2012 can step back into 2008. I am not sure you can go from 2008 to 2012 as easily. I also don't like taking extra tests so the upgrade test option doesn't suit me. I do not think that being certified in 2008 and 2012 will show an employer any benefit

Thanks fella, its good that there is no option to upgrade, otherwise might have tried to go that way. will start with 70-642.

Good point, as i should have got my 2008 MCSA in 2010 instead of the 2003 one, but it doesnt matter. One of my worry was about going from 12 to 08, i doubt i will start using my certs for another year or 2 so by that time 2012 will be norm
