Started studying for CCNP SPEDGE

filkenjitsufilkenjitsu Member Posts: 564 ■■■■□□□□□□
I was studying SWITCH after passing ROUTE but I do nothing SWITCH related at work and I was losing interest over the last month I have been studying.

Decided to go after CCNP SP as my main responsibilities are OSPF, BGP, MPLS, VPLS, Carrier Ethernet, etc.

I am currently reading MPLS Fundamentals and using the INE CCIE SP video series for advanced technology.

Exam Topics:

Currently reading MPLS Fundamentals, finishing up chapter 3. I will not need to read many sections in the book as they are not relevant to SPEDGE (Traffic Engineering, QOS, MPLS - ATM, etc.)

I will detail some past training I have received in VPLS and MEF sometime later on this thread.

What books did you read for CCNA SP?
  • filkenjitsufilkenjitsu Member Posts: 564 ■■■■□□□□□□
I had a paid course through Global Knowledge at my work which provided the custom books and lab guides. I would say knowing IOS-XR commands including all show commands, privileged and administrative modes, the difference between all the modes and what the different show commands do, etc. Is a big requirement. Lots of drag and drops on those tests. Read IOS-XR Fundamentals.

    Reading:

I have read the following chapters in MPLS Fundamentals (1 - 3) while taking notes in Evernote summarizing the details that need to be reviewed more than once. I am enjoying the study so far! The nitty gritty of the reserved labels, penultimate hop popping, explicit null, etc. I am excited to learn more about LDP!

At my work we had to do some MTU redesign over the last year. One of my co-workers was leading the charge and it was very interesting to learn about how fragmentation can affect network performance, the amount of labels in use determining the MPLS MTU and how that differs from the IP MTU. It was nice to read more details about it in MPLS Fundamentals.

Been watching a video series to help me understand these concepts more as well as having another person explaining the topic to me outside the book (INE CCIP SP Series).

I got these videos on sale around Christmas time! Buy one video series ($299) and get $50 off ($249) + BOGO (got CCIE R&S Advanced Technology Series). Great Deal! My work paid for them as well!

Some Training I had experienced recently that relates to the CCNP SPEDGE was a Metro Ethernet Forum Certification class. Below are the materials from that class. It had a massive amount of material as it covered MEF and Cisco IOS XR 9K MEF configurations.

Sorry for the terrible quality pictures, but I wanted to upload the material to share as much as to have it all in one place for me so I can pull up the book indexes for study use without having to lug out all 4 books to find the topic I wanted to review!

I am still watching INE CCIE SP video 11: MPLS Layer 3 VPN (L3VPN) Overview, VRF Overview. I am going through it slowly, stopping the video often to take notes and ponder the details of the subject he is teaching.

These are CCIE level videos and I am only studying for the CCNP SP tests, but the level of detail is invaluable for my work as well!

Some video resources available to me include the INE CCIE SP videos as well as the INE CCIE R&S Advanced Technology videos. Similar information is covered in both but it seems that the CCIE R&S video series may have a more complete video on LDP. So far, I have not run into a video on the CCIE SP AT videos that goes deep into LDP like the book MPLS fundamentals is doing. LDP has all the complexity of an IGP such as OSPF or EIGRP where it forms neighbors and has multiple timers to be aware of. I will let you know how different the videos are between the two sets:

    CCIE R&S videos:

The Big Picture 00:10:33It is important to have a good understanding of WHY we would use a technology before diving into the bits and pieces of how to make it all work. In this Nugget, Keith introduces the Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) application called Layer 3 Virtual Private Networks (MPLS L3VPNs), and why it's a great example of why we love to use MPLS solutions.

    icon_play_large.png
Label-Based Forwarding 00:22:02MPLS is teaching an old dog a new trick, specifically for a router to forward packets based on a new label, instead of looking at the layer 3 IP header. In this Nugget, Keith shares how the forwarding process works, along with some information on what is in a label and where it is injected in a protocol stack. Packet capture files demonstrated in this video are available as part of the NuggetLab files for this video. To learn more about using the Wireshark protocol analyzer, please watch Keith's WireShark course here at CBT Nuggets.

Implementing MPLS 00:28:50In this Nugget, join Keith and add the commands to an IPv4 network to create an MPLS enabled IPv4 network. An overview of using GNS3 to build your own practice network is provided along with a strong encouragement to practice, practice and practice what you see in the video. NuggetLab files include the base configurations for Loopback and Gigabit interfaces as well as routing protocols. The NuggetLab files also include the commands demonstrated in this video that enable MPLS on routers and their interfaces.

LDP 00:32:20Label Distribution Protocol is the method that two LSRs (Label Switch Routers) use to discover and negotiate an LDP neighborship to share LDP mapping information. In this Nugget, Keith and you investigate the details that occur during an LDP discovery and session setup. Problems that may prevent and LDP session from forming also are discussed and demonstrated.

    icon_play_large.png
LSP Path Selection 00:19:44Too many choices can lead to indecision, so what does an LSR (Label Switching Router) do when it receives multiple label advertisements from different routers for remote network? The answer is contained in this Nugget. The packet capture demonstrated in this video is available in the NuggetLab files.

    icon_play_large.png
LIBs, FIBs and RIBs 00:17:11There are several tables that a Label Switching Router (LSR) will maintain. This Nugget addresses the Routing Information Base (RIB), Forwarding Information Base (FIB), Label Information Base (LIB), and Label Forwarding Information Base (LFIB). CEF's role also is discussed regarding these tables.

Transport Address 00:17:57Using the tune from Mr. Rogers . . ."Won't you please, won't you be, my neighbor?" If the transport address is not reachable, the answer to the question is "NO." In this Nugget, Keith shows you the relationship between the LDP router ID and the transport address that is advertised in hellos, as well as how to change both of them. Packet captures collected in this video are available in the NuggetLab area.

    icon_play_large.png
CE to PE Routing 00:20:28This Nugget discusses and demonstrates using OSPF, EIGRP, RIP, and BGP to dynamically share routes between the Customer Edge (CE) and Provider Edge(PE) routers. The commands and topology diagram used in this video are available as part of the NuggetLab files for the course.

    icon_play_large.png
Redistribution 00:32:56When using an IGP to exchange routes between a VRF on a PE and the CE router, there is no automatic redistribution (import/export) between the IGP and BGP. In this Nugget, Keith walks you through how to manually configure the bidirectional (also sometimes called mutual) redistribution on the PE routers. The configuration and show commands used in this video are available as part of the NuggetLab files for this course.

    icon_play_large.png
Control and Data Plane Verification 00:32:22In this Nugget, Keith walks you through the steps to verify the Control and Data planes for MPLS L3VPNs, including identifying the VPN and Transit labels that are used in a packet simultaneously when forwarding over the core of the provider network. Packet captures collected in this video can be found in the NuggetLab area.

VRF Enabled Utilities 00:19:02Using everyday tools like Ping and Traceroute can be a bit challenging with VRFs on a PE unless we know the correct syntax to use. In this video Keith explains and demonstrates how to add VRF specifics to those commands for success at the CLI. Supporting files, including the full final configs of all 9 routers used in this course, are included in the Nuggetlab files.

I am working my way through the MPLS fundamentals videos through CBT Nuggets right now as the CCIE SP INE videos were getting deep fast and I needed some more details to fill in the gaps. The CBT Nugget videos are simpler and the whole series is five and a half hours, where the INE videos I need to watch are over 20 hours total. I will get back to the INE videos after I finish this shorter more simpler set first.

SHORT DESCRIPTION: Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a data plane and control technology that is used in packet (that is Internet Protocol) networks. Now over ten years old, it has taken root firmly as a fundamental tool in many service provider networks. The last ten years have seen a considerable consolidation of MPLS techniques and protocols. This has resulted in the abandoning of some of the original features of MPLS, and the development of other new features. MPLS has moved from a prospective solution, to a grown-up technology. Now that MPLS has reached this level of maturity,...

    Overview: Traffic Engineering with MPLS
Design, configure, and manage MPLS TE to optimize network performance Almost every busy network backbone has some congested links while others remain underutilized. That's because shortest-path routing protocols send traffic down the path that is shortest without considering other network parameters, such as utilization and traffic demands. Using Traffic Engineering (TE), network operators can redistribute packet flows to attain more uniform distribution across all links. Forcing traffic onto specific pathways allows you to get the most out of your existing network capacity while making it...

There is not enough time left in my life to get through these books.... I find these topics so interesting though! It is amazing to finally be seeing the nuts and bolts of the network that I work with on a daily basis. I have had a steep learning curve to get up to speed with my current job role. I first had to get through my CCNA, then get good at IGPs and BGP with CCNP ROUTE. Now seeing much more detail with MPLS, LDP, etc. than I ever learned via my CCNA Service Provider is exciting! When I am reading through these chapters and watching these videos it is revealing so much about things I look at and troubleshoot every day!

Still making my way through the CBT Nuggets videos. I am not taking that many notes on the first 5 or 6 so far as many of these topics were already covered in my readings of MPLS Fundamentals as well as the INE videos I have been watching lately. It is good to hear many of the topics repeated and have them taught at a slower pace.

Ok, I finished watching LSP Path Selection and Libs, Fibs, and RIBs through CBT nuggets. I was concentrating better on the INE videos because they overloaded me with excellent info.

These CBT Nugget videos are great, but I have already read most of the chapter on LDP in MPLS Fundamentals, so I knew the concepts with more details than was presented in the video. There were some things about CEF that were great to know, I have not gotten to the CEF Chapter in MPLS Fundamentals yet.

    filkenjitsu - Excellent 'blog'.
How do you take notes when watching the videos? I do a screen capture, unfortunately reviewing the screen capture later I'm unable to follow.
I normally use OneNote for taking notes while reading the books. I skipped chapter I in MPLS Fundamentals, stuck on chapter II, but think I may have to re-visit ChI.
Continue updating, you progress insprining me to re-start my Edge studying, it has been on pause since July '13.

I use Evernote which is free and is an Adroid/Apple/Windows/Mac app and available via web browser.

I will copy and paste screen shots of show commands and paste them in around my own notes.
