In a windows server environment, when you buy a domain from godaddy do you need to create an "A" record to point to godaddy?

Normally you would not buy a domain for a Windows Server Active Directory environment, most people use a .local or some other non existent tld. You would not want the internal structure of your environment exposed to the internet like that. Plus you are likely to have dns issues if your internal domain and external domain are the same.

so how would external users access your domain? Also, would you use your dns from your ISP or the ip address of thew windows server?

I guess I was thinking you were setting up windows server to use active directory, if it is just to host a website or some other service then yes you would register a domain and setup an A record. The server type has no bearing on this.

I do mean setting up active directory. Also, when setting up the DHCP service, are you suppose to advertise the dns server that the ISP gives you or the IP of the windows DNS server?

Okay so for Active Directory your internal domain should have nothing to do with the outside world. Active Directory requires Active Directory integrated DNS and will install the services when you setup your domain. For your DHCP do not use your ISP or any external dns servers unless you want the heartache of diagnosing issues and wondering why AD does not work properly. The AD DNS can resolve to root hints or outside DNS and pass the result to the network clients for resolving external domains.

Ok so the only reason why you would want to register a domain in godaddy or similar is for a web site or for a microsoft exchange owa domain?
