Name resolution used in different situations

One of the things I've had trouble with is understanding when Windows uses different types of name resolution. Can you help me figure that out?
Environment: a domain with multiple 2008 R2 DCs. Client include Windows 2000 Server, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 computers are configured with with static IP addresses and both DNS and WINS, pointing to a DC for the former and a former DC (now a member server) for the latter. and Windows Server 2008 R2 member servers only have DNS configured pointing to a DC. Group Policy pushes out the preferred DNS suffix of this parent domain and the child domain.
Does the client computer use NetBIOS, WINS, or DNS resolution in the following examples:
1. A .bat logon script in the format of \\(server)\share.
2. Going to the run line and typing \\(server).
3. Making a RDP connection using just the server name.
