If I were you I would have to buy 3750's. The 3550 and 3560's wont run v15 code, but you can probably do like 80% of the topics without it.

At least get 1 x 3750 if you are going the GNS route so you can use that as a breakout switch.

thanks gorebrush 3750 break out switch what is that for? is that to tie the routers in gns3 to the switches? can you explain or point in in right directions.
    thanks man! ;)

so what features do i look for in a 3750 ? or does it matter just get one? thanks man!
  • gorebrushgorebrush Member Posts: 2,743 ■■■■■■■□□□
Just get one with all the ports you need on it. I'm sure the IOS is easy enough to err... find.

There was some guy who posted that 3560 can run IOS 15 code so I decided to try it. Yes, we talked about this on the other thread but apparently it does work! C3560-24TS and C3560-48TS

    Hi guys,

32MB of flash memory is required (or is it 24MB?) to run v. 15 IOS on both the 3750 and 3560 switches, correct? Most of the 3750s and 3560s I am seeing on Ebay are 16MB, which would render them incompatible right?

What is the recommended most cost-effective 3560 or 3750 switch that will support v. 15 IOS? Should I Just keep looking for one with 32MB of flash, pick it up and flash it to version 15?

    Thanks!

Also, I DO have 1 3750G-24TS-1u I picked up from work that has 32MB flash and I successfully loaded version 15 on it yesterday. I assume I can mix this switch with other flavors of 3750/3560 as the main important factor is the IOS, correct?

    Thanks.

cwestmac: That's the same information I came up with in my research, although this makes me wonder: What about tftp booting? Would a smaller-flash device be able to boot 15.0 via tftp?

    I don't have a 3560 or 3750 to try, but am curious

    Yes me too.
    I do own 3750's but no 3560, just 3550.

Can I/should I mix IOS in my lab? Or keep them all the same??

Brian's post said to run the highest code you can on your existing 3560/3750 switch. This leads me to believe that their workbook won't contain technologies that are limited in the 15.x code.

You need 32MB flash. The IOS that I used was 16.x MB. I was able to fit two code both 12.2 and 15.x code since I had 32MB flash on both 3560. If you log in with you CCO account and look for the exact model, the IOS doesn't show up but if you grab the image found on 3560G download page that should work just fine with your 3560.

Would these switches work for a CCIE v5 lab? They have 32MB of flash, are cheap as heck, should support ios 15 and appear to be on the hardware supported list from what I can tell:

Cisco WS C3560 24TS S Catalyst 24 Port Fast Ethernet Switch 2 Gigabit SFP Uplink 0746320980553 | eBay

Does anyone definitively know the answer to my question? I'm close to pulling the trigger on these but I need to know for sure that they support v. 15 and can run everything that the switching portion of the v5 exam requires.

According to the release notes, it shouldn't as it's on the list of NOT supported devices:

Release Notes for the Catalyst 3750, 3560, 2960-S, and 2960 Switches, Cisco IOS Release 15.0(1)SE and Later - Cisco
Note blank.gifNot all Catalyst 3750 and 3560 switches can run this release. These models are not supported in Cisco IOS Release 12.2(5icon_cool.gifSE1 and later: WS-C3560-24TS, WS-C3560-24PS. WS-C3560-48PS, WS-C3560-48TS, WS-C3750-24PS, WS-C3750-24TS, WS-C3750-48PS, WS-C3750-48TS, WS-3750G-24T, WS-C3750G-12S, WS-C3750G-24TS, WS-C3750G-16TD. For ongoing maintenance rebuilds for these models, use Cisco IOS Release 12.2(55)SE and later (SE1, SE2, and so on).

But on the other hand, I've heard the "32M" is the deciding factor, so my final judgement is .... I don't know. Sorry icon_sad.gif

According to the link, it's not supported. As mentioned already, you won't see the IOS image for that specific switch but if you download the "G" code it should work. That's what I did and it worked for me and it seems like for others as well. Again, here's the screenshot of my Cisco Catalyst 3560-24TS and 3560-48TS. Will it work for you? Hopefully? Again, my 3560 are 32MB model and the IOS code that I downloaded was around 16.x MB.

*EDIT* I just tried to load IOS 15.x on two more 3560-24TS that I will be adding to my home lab and it loaded fine.
