  Scuba-divers flashlights are fantastic for dark places, as for how you dress (me as a man, your username suggests you are a woman so something along the same lines):

  A real scuba divers flash will burn its self out, out of water if kept on for more then 30 seconds or so, mates burns your skin if you touch the lens.
  A decent mini maglight is what I keep in the draw. I use to carry it around but now phone torch with the camara is a great tool. Plus a decent bar code scanner app. Great for reading serial numbers in dark dusty corners.
  
  Dress code? Well think of visiting shops. What do staff wear who serve you. General its on the smarter side of casual. On first day in a new job unless I was told different it would be shoes shirt and smart trousers. Then look around and see what every one else is wearing. In future aim to be smarter than 80% of them.

  There are different types of scuba flashlights, I wouldn't be up on all of them as I don't dive but something like this is like a little lightsaber in the dark..

  Check out everyday-carry.com. They do reviews of multi-tools, flashlights, key-chain gadgets, flash drives, etc.
  
  For me, I carry a 32GB flash drive, a Leatherman Style and a Samsung S5. I'm amazed at how many pictures I end up taking.

  +1 with out doubt you want a small knife, pliers, screwdrivers and cutters. So either a small tool kit, or as Rocket suggests a leatherman is the perfect tool to carry around.
