Jay's Journey! - A WGU tale.

Hey, not sure if this thread is acceptable, if not, may the admins feel free to delete.

But, I am beginning my journey into WGU with a start date of Nov 1st. I am extremely excited that I finally chose a school and manned-up and accepted enrollment. I chose WGU for the certifications - plain and simple. My degree will be B.s. IT - Security. I really wanted the CCNA/Security to go with my current line of work to help open doors for me.

I'm creating this thread for a few reasons. One for motivation, provide my experience for those who are up in the air of the school/program, and for assistance. I'll probably be asking for more assistance at first haha.

So feel free to provide your feedback and tips, because I would really appreciate it!

To start off, I'll just be trying to get back into the hang of creating a schedule and studying at set times. I know everyone learns and studies differently. For me, I can never read for more than 30min. before I begin getting nauseous. So I'll be reading in 30min. increments.

Now I don't start until Nov 1, but luckily for me I can begin accessing the modules early. So i'll be doing the classes in my signature marked in progress.

Anything I should know about to make life easier?

Well worth the time and effort, even if your current employer cares or not.

ok, so been awhile and I started later than I had hoped. Jan 1st was my start date and finished ORA1, CUV1, and CRV1 (net+).

It was nice to get my first official cert, even if its a very entry level start, gotta begin somewhere. And the feeling of accomplishing something you set out to do is very rewarding in itself, I would like to add.

I'm currently working on CTV1 (sec+) and its a lot more theory involved in contrast to net+, from what I gather from skimming the modules. I'm excited to sink my teeth into the the actual course.

But, I did have one question for anyone who had experience with the following courses. C220 (linux+ part 1) and C221 (linux+ part 2) are in different terms. Now even though they're in consecutive terms, wouldn't it be better to work on them during the same term? That way the information is fresh? And the same question goes for C170 / C175 (data management) and C246 and C247 (ccent and CCNA). The way it is now is as follows:

    term 2
    -C220
    -C170
    -C246

    Term 3
    -C221
    -C175
    -C247

What are some of your guys opinions?

I'd want to take them back-to-back, but it's not like there's a big pause between terms--you can take the first course as the last course of a term and take the second course as a first course of a term.

Same goes for ICND 1 and 2.

Just passed the Security+ exam and completed my first term. The difficulty was pretty average in terms of having to study, review, and test. I will say though, I wish I took a different approach to the security+ exam. The labsim (WGU study material) I think was poorly setup. They basically just threw hundreds of terms at you and expected to remember them by rote memorization. I work a little bit different in needing to apply terms/theories/ideas to something and apply it.

Overall it's sort of nice having the Net/Sec+ done in 4 months time.

Now I'm doing the DataManagement - Applications (C170), anyone have tips/advice etc.

C170 was almost my last class so it's still fresh in my mind. The exam itself is not difficult. Go through the material, take the practice test, study up on what you need, then take the exam.

The assignment was somewhat fun, however what wasn't fun was dealing with taskstream since their comments are vague. My best advice for that is ask your mentor for submitted examples and see what he can give you.
