Will i find employment with a non related IT degree?

Long story short im in college and i missed my deadline to apply as a info systems major so they told me i have to wait 2 years to reapply so i was like w/e im not trying to stay in college that long just for that degree so i chose econ as a major but didnt like it because it was too difficult to me and i wasnt interested so then i chose sociology because it was the next thing i was good at in school and it would help me graduate faster since i took a couple classes in that already, i still have another year left and the only cert i have is A+,working on my net+ now. I have experience in IT as well but its only 6 months as a network engineer before they eliminated the part time position over the summer and ever since then i been back at retail while im in school

but im curious to know after school when i apply for jobs and they see i am a sociology major with some certs and little experience how difficult will it be for me to get employed and espicially in major city like ny which i plan on moving to after school

Idk if im wrong or not but i be looking at some job apps in IT and some will say they just want a bachelors (i figure just because most jobs in that field just want to know you have discipline to achieve that) but then theres some jobs that want you to have a IT related degree, does anybody have any suggestions or experience with this situation?. I want to apply for internships to but i notice alot want the degree to be in IT too if you apply to there programs

Yes, it is possible to find employment without a degree in IT ,specifically. I have a degree in Classics and now work as a Systems Engineer. There are lots of people who even have jobs in IT and are very successful even without a degree at all. It all comes down to how hard you work and what you can bring to the table when speaking with prospective employers.

Job descriptions in the IT field are like an employer's wishlist for what their ideal candidate will look like. In reality, they will end up settling for less since almost no one will meet ALL of the requirements they are requesting. I don't I've accepted a job where I have met more than 70% of the requirements for experience, certifications and education.

The last two jobs I got REQUIRED at least an AA degree which I didn't have at the time. I have since resumed my classes towards a BS degree, job hunting again and have second round interviews with two places that requested a BS degree.

You have work experience in the IT field and a certification, that is an excellent start because getting your first IT job is always the hardest part and where having a related degree will help you the most.

Now, don't get me wrong a degree is important to open up more opportunities and certainly any degree is better than no degree.

One of our Sys admins where I work just finished his BS in Psychology... Maybe that can add some perspective. When I heard that I laughed a bit (in my head, of course). And the man is a volunteer firefighter. Another coworker of mine was pre-medicine. He graduated, and now works at the help desk.

As others have said you can be very successful in IT with or without a degree. The question becomes 'how much are you willing to apply yourself?' This can be said for any field really, but it particularly resonates within IT.

The job I work at now required a BS and an A+... 18 months later I still don't have either.
