Your experience with Linux Academy?

So there was this online offer to prepare for Linux- related certs with Linux Academy. Online- based courses, videos, live servers and such. Anyone here has any experience with them? How basic/complex are their courses? Worth the money ($25 a month)?

I took the Linux Academy Linux+ class through Udemy.com. I finished the course, but it didn't stick. At least the new stuff, like Debian. I still find myself struggling to remember some of the Debian stuff and things I don't use on a regular basis, like say umask. It is easy to look it up and figure it out, just don't have every topic off the top of my head. I see you have LPIC-1, if you really learned the material, the video I watched wouldn't offer you any more. The most in depth videos I watched was from LinuxCBT.com. 40 hours worth.

I'm using the Linux Academy course now. So far, I like it a lot. The community there is very helpful as well. It's nice to be able to spin any distro you want to work on the CLI.

I worked through the first half of the LPIC-1/Linux+ course and was very pleased. As mentioned above, the ability to spin up a VM (of any distro) on the fly is a huge time saver. I stopped my subscription temporarily because I needed to shift gears in my studying for work related reasons. I'm about to ask them to pay for a 1 year membership, though, and pick it back up.

It's a pretty good learning site and if you have a question on any subject they'll respond it really fast

Thank you brownwrap, for the heads up on the level of complexity.
Others here mentioned that you get your questions answered quickly there. At what level of complexity were your questions?

I actually did not ask questions there. I am a long time Red Hat user. I use yum at least once a week to several times a day. I have built lots of software at my current job. If it wasn't for Linux+ being mandatory, I would be studying it right now. Many things bother me about being forced to take this test. Number one being having to learn Debian. Nothing against it, but I have never used it and we don't have it installed anywhere over the nearly two hardware machines and VMs. So I am trying to memorize Atp commands, command switches, and stuff I have never used or probably will use to get this out of the way.

I ran across this guy's videos today. I haven't watch any all the way through, but he has nine, 1 hour videos. I did attend an online session this morning given on shared libraries by the Urban Penguin. He said he plans more of them.

I've been sending them messages on twitter for the past 6 months to update it, still nothing. They seem focused elsewhere but I will continue to pester! :)

Thanks everyone for the kind words. We work hard at the Linux Academy to answer questions and to help make learning easy. We will be releasing our RHCSA 7 course in April and LPIC-2 following after that! We have heard your tweets and will ensure you have some great LPIC-2 content in the near future.

    Thanks again!

Another satisfied user here, I've used them for AWS, but also for some other Linux stuff (Bind configuration, Chef, etc). Big plus from me, especially for that price

    @linuxacademy

that's great to hear. Your website was the best resource I've used during my LPIC-1 studies. I'm very glad to hear that you are planning on including more material on RHCSA and LPIC-2.

Keep up the great work icon_thumright.gif

So I went on and subscribed for a year with Linux Academy. Seasonal allergies knocked the living daylights out of me and I lost the focus I once had, so I am hoping that through these courses I'll get my focus back. My LPIC-1 is expiring soon and due to sick time I'll probably have to just let it quietly expire.
It seems that Linux Academy is a great tool to learn particular subjects if you are new to them. Also, your questions to instructors are answered through a discussion board, a tad of your typical open- sourcey way of providing support of which I am not a big fan. But so far I haven't got any questions so I don't know how quickly you get your questions answered.
Plenty of things I do like with LA. Spinning a VM in order to do your lab study happens in no time, which is very good. There are no limitations/limited editions, you get the full server. Including RH7, for which Red Hat wants you to have corporate email in order to download it for your own VM. You can wipe out your installed server and start another one in a very short time. Just that saves you valuable time setting up VM's within your own home lab.
Recently, they added the 201 material (first exam for LPIC-2). Announcement is still on for RHCSA material.
If you subscribe annually, you can download any lesson as an MP3 file.
Courses outside of RH/LPI domain also look appealing, at least to me that never had a chance nor was pushed to work with, like AWS, DevOps and OpenStack.
I got in to stay focused, but I think this can be a great learning vehicle. All in all, money well spent.

The sound quality is terrible, his language is heavily accented, it's a bulleted presentation instead of live server. .. I know, it's free but is it helping anything?

It seems like a good intro presentation. Probably not geared towards an experienced IT professional, or anyone going for the LPI exams. But could be a cool intro to IT or Linux (opinion after just getting thru the first few mins of the single above link).

Edit: Looked at the rest of his presentations. Seems like an interesting class. I might load them up on VLC player and blitz thru them, even if just for his explanations on sed and awk alone (which were 2 tools I wanted to dive deeper into after I pass the Linux+ later this month).

    Thanks for the link brownwrap.

Nothing but praise for Linux Academy - why isn't this a sticky? As I believe this question has come up over and over again.

Linux Academy has great content from Linux (RHCSA and RHCE) Puppet and other great content as well. With helpful forums and chat groups too.

Agreed with Jock. LA is an excellent training resource and has helped me take my Linux skills to another level. I prefer their Ansible course to the Puppet one; I think its laid out in a much more succinct manner.

If it wasn't for Linux Academy, I wouldn't have passed my RHCSA.

Over 14,000 views for this thread, is that isn't a clue to have this post sticky or have a sticky for Linux Academy and the quality training they provide.

Highly recommend Linux Academy up until Dec 28 I had been a monthly subscriber since early 2014 so I finally just purchased the year membership. The detail and quality of videos I seen anywhere else along with the ability to spin-up multiple VMs to follow along with.

Probably because there is no active moderator for this section.
