Recursive Query Test require forwarder and root hints?

More pratice questions I can't figure out:

You are the administrator for your company’s DNS server and users are complaining that they can’t reach the Internet. Using the DNS console, you test DNS by using a simple query. It passes. Then you test using a recursive query and it fails. Which of the following could explain the failure of the recursive query test?
a. The DNS server you are forwarding to is not in the root hints.
b. Forwarder not configured or root hints not configured.
c. The DNS resolver is not running in the DNS server.
d. Forwarder not configured and root hints not configured.

For Recursive Query Test in the DNS console to work, does it require both the forwarder and root hints to be setup correctly?

a. The DNS server you are forwarding to is not in the root hints.

You forward to IPs... so not the answer (you don't resolve to get to the forwarder)

b. Forwarder not configured or root hints not configured.

Sound nice but its an OR answer. If fwd are configured, then root hints are. Tricky answer. For recursion to work you need at least: Fwd configured or Root hints configured. In the former case, the forwarding server does the recursion. In the last case, your own DNS does it.

c. The DNS resolver is not running in the DNS server.

???????

d. Forwarder not configured and root hints not configured.

Now, this could be... If you don't have both, no recursion... and still you will be able to resolve locally.

Anyone agrees?
