$50 is too low to pass up the cloud + test... anyone have any resources that are worth looking into.. I saw a couple on amazon.. but interested in knowing what everyone here used as a resource.

By the way thanks Itrimble for letting us know... I took the Server + & Project + when proctor u was running their last promotion... much better than paying 277 per cert.

I prepared by watching the free videos on SimpliLearn and I got a 7-day free trial of the McGraw-Hill book - yesterday. I would say you need to really understand virtualization as a whole - connection, storage and security tied in with best practices. I think CompTIA exams are - slowly but surely - increasing in difficulty with questions sometimes associating/incorporating 3 or 4 domains together.

    c/p of old post.

there isn't much out on cloud+ yet. maybe i should make a udemy course or something?! icon_cool.gif

btw, i took cloud+ on 1/2 and - at that time - felt it was more challenging than security+ which i had taken right before (my first CompTIA cert).

    I booked the Cloud+ and Project+ for March 21 and 28th respectively.

Hopefully it is enough time to study, I am fairly reasonably versed in both topics

Honestly, if you deal with virtual environments daily - you'll be good to go with Cloud+. Same deal if you work with the PMO, Project+ just involves LOTS of memorization - specific terms, processes and formulas.

^ Agree. Just took the cloud plus today and passed. It is simple if you work in that environment and have networking and visualization knowledge.

Signed up for Project+ and Cloud+ and scheduled my tests for the end of the month. I'm at the tail end of a Project Management Masters (6 weeks left) so I'm hoping that is mostly a review. I have VM experience and the study material seems more like review for Cloud+, so I might just sneak these two certs in with minimal effort and for only $50 each. Even if Cloud+ isn't going to land me that next rung in the career ladder, I find it really interesting so it's a joy to study for. Not so much with P+, though. ;)

For once, dragging my feet paid off. icon_cool.gif

Thanks to everyone that mentioned it here. I knew about the $100 deal but wouldn't have known to pull the trigger on the $50 deal until I saw it here. Good hustle.

I think for people who have experience with projects and haven't gotten signed off for CAPM/PMP (whatever reasons) - this can be pretty beneficial.

I'm not knocking the cert by any means, or I wouldn't be taking it. I just spent the last two years doing an IT:Project Management Masters and I don't like the PM part of it. It's a valuable skill and could be an interesting career but I would have been happier with a different speciality, like Information Assurance. I'm not sure if it's because I'm still a tech with no management duties but I just don't feel like pursuing it at the PMP level right now. I'll keep logging my project hours so when I do feel like doing PMP I'll meet the requirements, but that won't be for several years. Right now I'm doing P+ because it's an ITPM centric certification and it's lifetime, whereas CAPM requires a retest in 5 years. Throw in the $50 deal from ProctorU and it's a no brainer.

Haha - no doubt! Anytime you can validate your skills (to HR mostly but that's what gets you interviews) it pays off. Personally, a cert after some work experience means to me that the person has absorbed most of the necessary knowledge and possesses the toolbox and skill-set to be successful on their own now.

Gess, I see what your saying, but trust me... you want the PMP part. I'm going to study PMP in two months. In being an SEC IT Manager in the military, I really started to see the importance of PMP. I have a PM Masters Degree and at that time (2012), I was thinking just like you. After going through this 8 month rigorous IT manager course, PMP, Project+, and CISSP just made more sense. I finished the CISSP not to long ago, but PM knowledge really helped. I would still go for it.

I don't doubt that PMP is good for you right now. And I'll probably go for it later, in about 5 years when I'm starting to look to get off of the gear and into a supervisory role. Like I said, I'm at the end of an MS:IT with a PMAN specialty and I loathe it. It would be really unhealthy for me to dive into PMP right now with how much disdain I have for project management at the moment. The mistake is mine, but I'm not going to amplify it by trying for PMP. PMI is a lot like CompTIA as well, always trying to find a way to get you to spend money on them. I'm in no rush to sign up for that. I'll keep logging my hours and I'll circle back around to it down the line. But for now I'm going to work on some of the certs that will help me directly now and deal with PMI later. I was once open to CAPM but again, no desire to throw money at PMI. I'll do P+ next week, finish my Masters, and spend many happy years not thinking about the PMBOK. ;)

I'm either going to pursue a 2nd Masters in CyberSec like I should have the first time around, or start a Doctorate. I'll fuss with PMP when the time comes. Looking at the degrees in your signature we're on different tracks, but I'm sure we'll both end up doing something we enjoy.

Hopefully for a little while longer. I just ordered the study guide, the latest I could schedule the exam was the end of the month. Something in April would work better as I just don't have a couple nights this week to devote to studying for it.
  • GessGess Member Posts: 144 ■■■□□□□□□□
Just passed Project+ with them. Given my Masters is in PMAN and I've spent the last two years or so studying it, I went in a little cocky. I already had Amazon.com: CompTIA Project+ Exam Prep eBook: A.S. Austin: Kindle Store on my Kindle from 2013 when I last thought about dealing with this cert and read it twice. His book is basically an expanded vocabulary primer. It covered stuff like Arrow Diagramming Method that really isn't used in PM anymore but still shows up in the test sometimes. It won't completely prepare you for the exam but for $4.99 and 45 minutes of reading it was a nice review.

I still saw things on the exam I have never seen in PM, like tollgates. Just really random stuff. I ended up with an 800, which is fine as you need 710 to pass, but I was sweating pretty good once I started and thought there was a chance I had failed. Was very relieved that I passed it and never have to think about it anymore.

Very much worth the $50 and the few days of review. Thanks again to everyone that brought it to my attention here. I might give Server+ a crack on Tuesday but it would probably be a toss up for me with networking not being a strong-suit. I used to be a Unix admin but that was my last job and I haven't touched a server in months.
  • GessGess Member Posts: 144 ■■■□□□□□□□
I can't believe I knocked out these three certs for $150 when I wasn't planning on doing any certifications until this summer. Awesome deal, nice little foundation before I dive into some vendor specific stuff soon.

Oh, ProctorU was backed up tonight. Probably everyone trying to squeeze in their exams before the deadline. It only took about 10 extra minutes, not bad.

  • PJ_SneakersPJ_Sneakers Member Posts: 884 ■■■■■■□□□□
This was a great opportunity. I hope they continue this trend and release more exams through ProctorU. The only reason I didn't take Cloud+ is that I'm saving it for a couple years to renew my other CompTIA's.
