Ethernet Port to Fastethernet connection

Hi all,
Can anyone please tell me, whether a Ethernet port can be connected to a FastEthernet Port? Will it transmit data and able to ping each other? What about the Speed of such a connection since Ethernet port has only 10 Mbps and FastEthernet can operate in 100 Mbps, so if the 2 ports are directly connected by a cable ,will the ports be up and propagate data?

Regards

Fast Ethernet ports are 10/100, which means they can operate at 10Mbps or 100Mbps, however each side has to be the same speed. One side can't be 100 while the other is 10.

EDIT: Well, the two sides can be different speeds, but there will be issues.

They will be able to yes. They will only operate at 10mbps. You can on the fastethernet port however change the speed using the speed command on interface config mode if using Cisco gear. They should auto-detect the speed though.

Yes, but the connection will utilize the slower speed of the two interfaces it spans.

You can connect those ports. However, consider this:

*The will operate by the slower link - 10 Mbps.
*They should be able to auto-detect at which speed to operate.
*You may need to hard code (configure manually) the speed on each side - you'll have to configure both ports to work at 10 Mbps.
