VCA-DCV Info

Hello all :)

I'm looking to get more into virtualization. I'm currently a Jr. Sysadmin and looking for my "path". I really like virtual and built an ESX box at home. I think what I want to focus in on is Windows server/virtualization. My question is, is this book good for the VCA-DCV?

That book should be sufficient outside of the training links on the VMware website. This cert is very entry level and can be a good start. However, if you want to dive much deeper into virtualization I would highly recommend jumping straight to the VCP-DCV. ;)

I concur, go straight for the VCP-DCV.

Either do VCA or VCP first. VCA-DCV never expires and there is an online video / course you can enroll into for free.

    https://mylearn.vmware.com/mgrReg/plan.cfm?plan=41162&ui=www_cert
Just do the interactive course and write notes to remember / review. 2.5 to 6 hours is all you need to pass the VCA-DCV.

I'm currently taking the stanly VCP-DCV 5.5 class and I've found a handful of things from the VMware VCA taught in the current Stanly CC course. I guess next I'll be using the Scott Lowe - Master vSphere 5.5 book + cbt nuggets + home vSphere lab to supplement my studying.

I plan to take the test in 1-2 weeks.

If you have some money sitting on the shelf, then VCA is good for you. I studied with the videos and a couple of .pdf on the VMware site (study with the blueprint with you and look for the topics on the site). It's a quite easy exam.
VCP is way better, there's a course available at Stanly College for a few money; as a study guide, 'Mastering VMware vSphere 5.5' is awesome.

When will you rise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep, So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler And your need like an armed man.

I appreciate the enthusiasm guys, but I'll definitely be doing the VCA first, lol. I think I'll buy that book and use the courses on
Pluralsight. Maybe I'll try and find the CBT Nuggets course as well.

Most of the reviews I've read say that the free Fundamentals training on the VCA-DCV page is pretty much enough to get you through - buying other resources is probably overkill given that you can also access additional information and training online for free...

The book is only 30 bucks, I don't mind buying it.

Seems like you are pretty much set of buying the book. No problem with that at all. It's just that this test really has very little value by itself, let alone after adding the cost of the book. Several here with very little exposure to virtualization have passed this test just by doing the free "course". It's really that simple.

I'll combine both the book and the Pluralsight videos.

Well, you'll own the books and videos for the VCP cert.

I read that before. I'd still like to start with this cert regardless. I don't think it's a good idea to jump for the VCP. Already bought the book anyways.

It's only 30 bucks for the book anyways....
