Raspbery Pi 2 RDC Project

Hey guys,

So the past few months I've been tasked with deploying a low-cost RDC system for a Terminal Server deployment which has a low priority and I recently acquired a Raspberry PI 2, at home, that I now have a image of Ubuntu 14.04 on it and I've successfully norton ghosted the MicroSD to a External hard drive with an External DVD drive.

I use it at home for RDC and VMware Web client viewing into the different networks, but what this has shown me is with about 3 hours of leg work I can make one image and then distro it to other MicroSD card and enable Out-of-the-box-experience on all of the images and deploy them as glorified RDC clients.

At roughly $65 for a unit plus a case it's a relatively cheap solution, question is has anyone ever used a Raspberry PI in this manner before?

What's RDC? (Sorry for my ignorance. I just don't understand your use case, tho I am interested.)

Gotcha. I've used my raspberry pi's at home for something similar. Never at work however.

We experimented with something similar but found the lack of hardware acceleration support in the RDC clients to cause performance issues at normal viewing resolutions such as 1920x1080.

I've found a riser expansion card that has a descrete graphics card on it and a VGA/DVI/HDMI connector on it. Ordered it off Amazon, going to add it to my RP 2 at home and see if does the trick.

I've been tickering the past few months with a hobbist RP 2 Car computer system: for Blind Spot, rear/front mounted night vision cameras, ODB2 sensors, HUD, 7.1 surround sound emulator, and a live streaming Go-Pro service for 4G unlimited service all on a 7 inch touchscreen with voice activation. It's been side project of mine to turn my car into Knight rider. :)

Hey you all know me as a certfication nut, but I have many hobbies, one is modifiying the piss out of my car! ...I've been called a closet grease monkey. icon_wink.gif

When you get the riser card, I'd love to hear your thoughts on how it worked out. I might want to order one for my RPi as well.

Found this website last night and they are working on a X505 riser card that comes with a discrete graphics card from ARM and a DDR3 SODIMM slot. The guy said in the email it will support 4 GB's of RAM, so for a RPi 2 to have 5 GB's total with a Quad core and a riser card that has a Discrete graphics card this makes for some interesting possibilities. :)

Here is a 3 amp battery switch for ignition to automatically and safety turn off the unit.

To fix the memory issue I'm going a different route I'm taking apart a external USB 2.0 hard drive and using it's SATA III caddy for a ultra-thin 1.8' 16 GB SSD, about $18 dollars on Amazon. This will have a 3 GB Swap partition and the rest will be for ext4 storage, the Ubuntu OS will be install on a Sandisk Extreme Pro MicroSDHC card.

The SSD is powered by a 4 port USB powered hub, this hub has a connector on it that requires 5V, so I'm using a 12V power adapter from a old laptop and hooking into into a dedicated connection to the battery in my car, however noce the gintion is turn off the connection is severed and it won't drain the battery.

In-case some are wondering I already have a high-output alternator on my car for the stereo system, and an addtional rear-mounted optima battery for more juice.. icon_smile.gif
