Help deciding which CPU

New rig time so need help decing the right parts, would rather not spend if its going to be a waste but want to future proof for as long as possible

My first choice on CPU is the Haswell i7 4790K (my mobo is 1150)

Best price so far is £245 but am just wondering is this overkill, not really a gaming fanatic who wants 500 FPS

Planning on adding 32 GIG ram to be able to run multiple VM's so not sure if a good processor is needed


Mobo = Asus Z87-C (purchased already)

PSU = Cooler master GX650W 80 plus Bronze (purchased already)

CPU = i7 4790k

SSD = OCZ Vector 150

RAM = Corsair Vengeance 32 GIG

If anyone can poke holes in this list I would love you opinion

    For multiple VM's, generally you want many vCPUs, which means many cores and hyperthreading. Rule of thumb is 2 vCPU per VM, unless you have low requirements for the VM, then maybe 1 vCPU is ok. The 2nd consideration is what is the minimum clock speed requirement, this is important also for CPU intensive single threaded apps. 3rd is VT technology support, it's 3rd because you will get basic VT support on any CPU for this board, the extra features are only really valuable if you go the VMware or Hyper-V route.

    Minimum might be something like the Core i7-4771 or Xeon E3-1220 V3. They have 4Cores, hyperthreading and most of the VT features.

    Are you going to get just one SSD?

    In my setup I use two SSDs for VMs and two 500 GB is Raid 0 for additional hard drive space (WDS image storage and file server etc) for the VMs.

    Definitely think about multiple SSD.

    What is your intended use for the VMs on this box?

    I ask because I'm running an old Dell Precision T7400 dual-quad Xeon box with 32GB RAM as my Linux box with two Windows workstation VMs running on it without any particular problems. I think the whole computer cost me less than your processor will.

    I have become a fan of the zealots @ PCMR. As long as you dont discuss anything console they have some great advice when needed lol.
