CCNA Recertification?

Hi ya's

My CCNA is going to expire at the start of November. The thing is im after enrolling for the CCNP but can i take the exam if my cert is expired?

Its an Offical Cisco networking academy where ill be doing my course will this change anything as I will be starting it before my CCNA expires.

Any ideas?

The requirement of CCNP is a valid CCNA.
If you take your CCNP exams before your CCNA expires, it will extend your CCNA.

You can take CCNP without a valid CCNA, but you have to pass it to be officially CCNP.

The CCNP track consists of more than one test. You can take the CCNP tests, but you won't be considered certified as a CCNP if your CCNA has expired. In order to become CCNP certified you MUST have a valid CCNA:

I meant CCNP tests.

If you lose your CCNA before being able to pass any CCNP test, you'll have to obtain your CCNA again. However if you manage to pass a CCNP exam before your CCNA expires, your CCNA is extended another 3 years.

Does it really matter if your CCNA expires if you get your CCNP? Wouldn't having the CCNP acknowledge the fact that you did have the CCNA at some point in time?

From what I read and interpret in Cisco's website, if you let your CCNA laps, you have to do it all over again. That means combo at minimum, or do the intro/ICND separately.

However, if you pass just one CCNP exam, your CCNA expiration resets for another 3 years.

Great incentive to keep the CCNA.

any CCNP test will extend your CCNA, so when you go to extend your CCNP via another test, your CCNA will be re-certified as well.

His problem is though that he only has until November to pass a CCNP exam to keep his CCNA. He doesn't have CCNP yet, that's what he is working on.

It's not possible for you to have a valid CCNP without a valid CCNA.

=> series of events:

Valid CCNA
write CCNP exam
CCNA automatically gets extended
finish all CCNP exams
CCNP certified with CCNA cert extended.

So I can take the exams but they wont really be valid if I dont have a valid CCNA (Which is kinda wierd if i say so!)

So in theory I could pass all 4 CCNP's but still not be ccnp certified unless my ccna is certified. As someone said doesnt having a ccnp cert is better then having a ccna?

It is, if you let your CCNA expire.

If you let your certification expire, technically you're not re-certifying. To re-certify, you could take the ICND exam or the CCNA exam.... or a 642 level exam.

Once it expires, you're back to square one -- either INTRO & ICND exams or the CCNA exam to get your CCNA Certification back.

Well, you can't be an MCSE unless you pass all the required exams. You can't say "Well I passed 6 of the exams which are harder than the XP exam, so why can't I be an MCSE?" Just think of CCNA as one of the required exams to get your CCNP, because that's really what it is.

If you had let your CCNA laps before passing your first CCNP exam, correct.
If you pass one of your CCNP exams before the CCNA expires, then the CCNA is extended 3 years, and so you have 3 years to complete CCNP.
Although the exams themselves have a 'shelf life' of 3 years. Or is it 2 years?
