How do you un-screw yourself when you set the run level to 1?

    What boot loader are you using? Usually there is an option there to change boot run level, and from there you can change permanently. Assuming you are in single user mode, you probably have root access to change this setting now in /etc/innittab

    If you are temporarily in run level 1, then a telinit desiredrunlevel or restart with shutdown -r now

    Another option is to boot from a live Linux CD, mount your hard disk and edit the inittab file.
