Resume review (trying to land 1st it job)

Heya everyone!

Please review my resume. I want to get my foot in the door at an established IT company and look for a Help Desk lvl 1 role. I work for a point of sale company and do not deal too much with networking/systems so I want to go into an IT focused job.

My goal is to either land a help desk job and stick with it until I can move up to systems or network administration. Or wait until I complete my associated and CCNA to get an entry level Network Engineer role at a hospital, ISP, or college.

With my limited IT experience do you guys think my resume is ok to land a help desk role? The one I am trying to get pays 35k starting for level 1 at a very good company. I don't just want to get into IT with any company just to get my foot in the door.

Starting pay will depend on the average market rate in your area, your experience, and your education. Hop on over to Salary.com or Glassdoor.com to get a rough idea of what your market value might be.

I don't like the way your education and certification sections are crammed together like that. It's difficult for me to quickly glance at and make heads or tails of what I'm seeing. Separate the two sections and don't cram your certs together on a single line.

Within the experience section, each job position should begin with a high-level overview of your daily duties and responsibilities as well as commonly used technologies. Then use a few bullet points to highlight projects, special accomplishments, achievements/promotions, etc. Don't rely solely on bullet points like this.

Also, if you want to increase your chances of a callback when trying to land that entry-level IT role, I recommend that you leverage any existing professional IT experience and tailor the resume accordingly. I see that you have already done that to some extent in the Assistant Manager role, for example. "T/S POS equipment..." You should expand on any professional IT experience that you have, and try to include as much detailed IT experience for all of your past jobs wherever possible.

Stay away from abbreviations like T/S and don't rely solely on acronyms (MCTS). Presume that the reader has no idea what these acronyms mean. Instead of using "T/S," consider using an action verb like "Analyzed" or "Resolved." For example, "Analyzed and resolved issues related to malfunctioning point of sale equipment..."

As a matter of fact, each bullet should begin with an action verb (the thesaurus is an extremely helpful tool). Avoid using the word "I" and referring to yourself in this manner. Instead of saying "I was in charge of the company's website," you should instead say "Managed/Oversaw/Administered/Governed the company's website..."
