How to prepare for the Linux+ LX0-103?

Hi everyone,

I took the exam today...and really surprised I failed as bad as I did. I had used Ubuntu as my main desktop for nearly six months (swapped back to Windows), have quite a bit of experience administrating CentOS and RHEL web servers (they were for projects, not work related). I had also been using the Sybex study guide and seemed to be doing quite well in their test questions, I also picked up a copy of "How Linux Works" by Brian Ward which I found gave very in-depth knowledge and would say explained the exam topics much better than the Sybex guide.

Getting to the point, how have you prepared for the exam? I had been using VM's both Ubuntu and CentOS for preparing it seemed to me I was lacking in knowing the obscure switches for commands not really used on a daily basis. Does anyone know of anywhere to get lab examples to practice these commands? Or, how do you practice using commands and remembering the switches?

It's an odd exam to train for having to remember some many commands and all the switches that go with them, seems quite overwhelming.

Thank for your help

It's not free but you can pay monthly ($25) @ https://linuxacademy.com There are labs with servers you can set-up and break down in multiple distros very easily. Follows the exam objectives and gives plenty of opportunities to practice obscure switches

I co-sign LinuxAcademy. That was my primary resource for studying for the Linux+. I'd also recommend focusing a bit more on CentOS/RHEL than Ubuntu/Mint/Debian, especially if you used ubuntu as your primary desktop for months. For some reason I felt as if the exam was slightly more Red Hat slanted than Debian.

If you want to try the LCFS at Linux Academy you may be better off.

I passed the old exam(s) by using the Sybex book and watching videos from Cybrary, ITUOnline, Career Academy and Linux Academy/Infinite Skills on Udemy (dunno if it's still on Udemy). Cybrary is free but I'd really recommend the ITUOnline (Dean Bushmill as instructor) and Linux Academy online training. Good luck and you'll get it!!!

Also, there is nothing like dual-booting on UEFI and gaining knowledge especially specialized nuances of troubleshooting installations that you don't get from VMs.

I'm a long way from doing this cert, but thought about dumping my OSX install for CentOS. I do have a few linux distros in VMs, but that doesnt seem to force me to use Linux on a daily basis. I think I really need to just wipe this thing and put CentOS on it and get stuck everyday on common tasks until I learn it completely. I'm thinking LinuxAcademy too in the future.

You can dual boot OSX and CentOS with rEFInd. Also, use Mac Linux USB Loader!
